She wanted to at least do access control untill this encryption thing is worked out and I dont think it gves you the choice for access control setting with the installation cd, she set the encryption with it though. I cant believe hw easy its supposed to be and shes having so much trouble
The only time that I have heard of users not being able to access the routers configuration page is when using an alternative browser than IE.
I don't understand what you need an installation CD for, as no software needs to be installed on the PC if you connect to the router using an Ethernet cable. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

Well we live in a fairly rural area so we're not too worried. We have had alot of problems with the linksys router - if you go on the bbc's website and try to watch a video stream for some reason it will stop broadcasting and needs to be rebooted.
http://192.168.1.1 works fine for me though, asks for admin and then loads the pages. They can take a while to load sometimes.. has she got the latest firmware update?0 -
She has no knowledge of wireless networking at all so the installation cd helped her set up naming the router ect and the wireless set up. I have never dealt with wireless myself either so I'm just trying to help her from home. She had a real struggle setting it up in the first place but then everyone was using it fine but no security
The ip router address was not loading even before she encrypted it which is why she had to run the installation cd again to do it wih that. She says the green bar at the bottom stays halfway accross and she can see where things should be but she cant click on things like advanced or anything. Things would be much easier if she could get onto that router addressThanx

I would suggest pressing the factory reset button on the router and setting everything up from scratch.
It is very easy to get into a mess with this as everytime you add security the router will reboot itself and you will need to reconnect.
I would also suggest locking the router down by mac address as it is very easy to hack WEP keys.
Hope this helps.0 -

The only reason that I can think of that may cause a problem when accessing the routers configuration pages is javascript, which would need to be enabled. This is a browser test page that could be tried to check that javascript is enabled and is working correctly. Until you can access the router using http://192.168.1.1 it will not be possible to configure it correctly. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

MAC address control does not really add security as it can be hacked just like WEP encryption. WPA-PSK is the only way to go for good security.

Browntoa wrote:has she tried turning the router off for a few minutes then back on and then trying again ??
She has not tried rebooting it yet but will do when she gets back later. She was very stressed last night having been trying to sort it out from 4.30 to gone midnight. She had lots of study to do but found herself stuck doing this. As the router is in her room the others seem to have left her with all responsibility which is unfair. She knows little about computers and nothing of wireless and networking. They just left her to it herself so she feels under pressure. She is a student nurse too and is working the whole weekend and the last tghing she needs is coming back to have to sort this out when she has studying to do aswell...Thanx

I understand that and she could advance to that later but something is better than nothing at the moment. I think she will get into more mess if I ask her to try that just yet. If the ordinary encryption isnt working properly prob this one wouldnt anyway so rather get the ordinary working firstThanx

If she cannot get anything sorted when she gets back today she will have to try and disable the encryption until she has more time to try things. I hope she will be able to do this easily too via the set up cd
I was reluctant to tell her to use the factory reset as wouldnt that mean she would have to set up the whole router again and wireless?Thanx
