Problem with firefox

Comments

  • This is an odd one indeed.

Have you installed/uninstalled any programs recently? Particularly net accelerators?

There is a version of firefox that you can run on a usb drive - portable firefox. You can also download and run it independantly of your installed firefox program on your hard drive. Click the link and download/unarchive to say a folder on your desktop. Run the program and see if you can connect with it.

    Hiya,

I think the problem you are having as a corrupted profile in Firefox.

When you uninstalled firefox, it did not uninstall your profiles. More than likely, when you reinstalled it, it just used your old profile and the problem you are having is with your profiles (which contain all your settings) and not your computer.

There are two ways around this. Either uninstall firefox, then use Windows Explorer goto C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR USERNAME]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ and your profile folder will be here (normally a using a collection of random characters as a name!). If you then delete this and then re-install Firefox, this should solve the problem.

The other way is to setup a new profile and use that instead of the old one. This has the advantage that you still have a copy of all your settings.

To do this, close firefox (if you have it open), Click the Start Button and select Run. In the box that opens, type firefox.exe -ProfileManager and click OK. This should open the firefox profile manager.

When it opens, click on Create Profile, answer any questions it asks until it returns to the profile manager with the new profile listed. Make sure it is selected and then click on Start Firefox.

This should then also give you a working Firefox again.

Hopefully this should fix the problem.

    Hiya,

The file location I listed is only the default place Firefox usually puts its profiles, they could be anywhere. You could try searching for a cile called bookmarks.html. This is the name of the file where Firefox stores all your bookmarks. If you find this, you should be in your profile folder.

In your reply, you have an extra space between the hypen and profilemanager. Is this just a typo in your post or did you put this extra space into Run?

I've just tried it on mine and it started the profile manager. You need to make sure Firefox isn't running at all. If you have a Firefox that has crashed and Windows still thinks it is running, (or an open Firefox windows) the command just opens another Firefox. Do CONTROL-ALT-DELETE and check the Processes tab that you have no processes called firefox.exe running. If you do, kill them and try the Run command again.

You used to be able to use firefox -p and firefox.exe -p as well to get into the profile manager so you should also try these and see if these work.

What version of Firefox are you trying to run? In the past, different versions have used different commands.

Locate bookmarks.html in your old profile folder - see http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/profile - and import them using Bookmarks Manager, i.e. Bookmarks - Manage Bookmarks, then File - Import.
