Right. So. We've established that low skilled roles that anyone of 3 million unemployed people can do are very low paid.

Well, who would have thunk it?

Reminds me of the thread by a postie defending the postal strikes a while back. He was upset that white collar workers in offices got paid more than a bloke whos job description was 'walk along a set route each day with a bag posting mail'

OP, your post is lucid enough and is not littered with spelling errors etc. Have you considered looking/training up for more lucrative non-manual opportunities?

I am based in the west midlands and to find a job that is more than min wage is hard, qualifications may get me a few quid an hour more but i aint got the time to get those qualifications, but what i do have is experience and employers dont want to pay for that either, recession or not it has always be an employers market and they will pay as less as possible.

Google Chrome has a built in spell check:D The way I see it is I either have to progress in my current job, retrain or just make do with the way things are, I could get a part time job but with 3 kids its not fair on my Mrs to be stuck looking after them all the time.

Forget the national average, a few £1+million executives and media stars really skew the average.

One thing I will say is that although the min wage isn't fantastic it is a heck of a lot better than some pay rates before. Holiday pay allowance has also been absolutely transformed and some other employee provisions such as maternity and paternity pay and conditions.

I've just typed some old pay rates I used to get into a calculator that adjusts for inflation and they work out around £5 an hour if converted to todays money. It's so easy to think that £7 p/h is rubbish because it is only just over a £1 more than min wage, but we must remember min wage is a reasonable point to start from.

Please don't get me wrong I'm in no way saying that £7 p/h is fantastic, just that basic jobs a few years back IMHO didn't have fantastic pay rates either...in fact they might have improved a bit (on average, there will always be exceptions).

"This may differ in London but certainly up here in the North of the UK its shocking."

The oil industry has a lot of not badly paid support jobs.

Or do you mean further north than Aberdeen area?

Not a chance for you, pal.

Your posting history have amply demonstrated you're a lost cause and unemployable.

I got tired of this a couple of years ago.. :(

Never got anywhere, despite working hard and trying to climb the slippery ladder. I just got more frustrated and down trodden as each year went by.

Last year I went to college part time, whilst working full time (Construction & Civil Engineering). This year I'm off to Uni to do Quantity Surveying and actually get a decent career. Job prospects in that area are very good, and I may even get sponsorship after my first year, so I can go uni, work for 15-17k and get my degree. (hopefully).

I really do think you need to get more qualified in the area you want to work in. There is just so much competition nowdays that you need something to stand out a bit. Also, look at what areas are still employing at the moment.

I only say it the way I see it in my sector. ;)
