We have and use loads of technology at home but the one thing I know nothing about are mobiles, so please bear with me !

I am upgrading my phone as my current Sony-Ericsson W200i is on its last legs after being dropped once too often.

After a lot of thought, what I now want in a phone is :

Good call quality
Good text ability
Ease of Use
Good battery life
MP3 player
Use of memory card to upload music etc
Radio
Calendar / Diary

The above are what I already have on my W200 but want to add :

Good quality camera
Sat Nav
Internet access (only on the rare occasion ie football results / ebay/bbc but not Facebook etc)

One of my friends has been very patient with me and explained loads of things and suggested that I look at a used Nokia N95 which seems to tick all the boxes.

Whilst looking at those, someone on MSE recommended that I consider the Nokia 5800 and that seems to be my phone of choice as I believe it can offer what I am after in a nice package.

I currently have a sim only with Vodafone which has 500mb data per month (their 'fair usage' policy even though they call it unlimited !!) which I upgraded yesterday so have the plan that suits me in place.

I ideally would like to buy a phone today from ebay and my OH has offerred it to me as a birthday present which is good news:) !

There are loads on ebay and it is a case of sorting the wood from the trees !!

I would be interested to hear anyone's comments about the phone, the camera, sat nav, diary, mp3 playerand what I should spend etc whatever you want to tell me, I am listening.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I look forward to the usual sound MSE advice but please not too technical !!
Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.

  • Hi there

A friend has one of these and is delighted with it. It's not my cup of tea, but it does what it says on the tin.

The video is good quality and the pictures seem ok (person taking the photos was not great at it). Call quality is good - as you would expect from a Nokia - and I've always found that Nokia's bluetooth works really well.

I found the screen rather fiddly to use, but that's just me.

With OVI Maps, I believe you can download the full UK map to the micro SD Card. This then allows you to use the sat nav without it accessing the internet all the time and using your data. I've never used OVI, so hopefully someone else on here will be able to help.

All in all, if you like Nokia phones then you should get on with this one.
In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move.

  • One other thing: Have a look at the Nokia 5230. It does everything the 5800 does, but has a lower res camera, no flash and is less than half the price ofthe 5800 (£85 from Voda brand new). Before you buy, it may be worth popping in to town and having a play with the 5230.

Final thing: Don't forget to buy a micro SD Card to go with the phone. Both will take up to a 16Gb card.

    Thanks for your help Oscar.

I am particularly after a decent camera so am prepared to pay for it but I have no experience with bluetooth whatsoever so any tips or advice would be welcomed.

Hi love mine no probs with anything you have mentioned but rarely use the camera, if looking on ebay try and find one with the latest software its at v51 at the moment, don't get one if it's below v40. no kinectic scrolling bugs etc

With regard to the above comment about the 5230. I don't believe it has wifi so you may wish to stay clear

I can't really comment on the features as I didn't use the camera etc, but as far as the phone itself goes, I did not like like and switched to another phone as soon as I got the chance. It is very chunky in comparison with other phones out there and I found it practically impossible to use without the pointer that comes with it.

After only a few weeks, the pointer became loose and fell out all of the time. How I didn't lose it in the few months I had the phone is beyond me.

But battery life was good. Just make sure you are happy with being able scroll, txt etc before committing.
