i was just replying to say that although i booked premier inn at euston, i've cancelled that and have booked into the YHA in london central - tbh i'm a bit unsure about sleeping in a dorm but it's worked out £170 cheaper so i couldn't turn it down and also as it's full of travellers there'll be loads of people in the lounge & meeting rooms for the teens to hang out with.

you enjoy your trip too kingfisher and let us know how you get on:)

I stayed in a YHA at St Pauls for the first time a couple of years ago. I was quite apprehensive, now I am totally converted. The people that you meet in hostels are so friendly and I get to learn so much about different countries, also travellers are usually good at sharing tips on places to go and see at cheapest prices. In fact me and OH ended up taking several people along to the proms with us. We are now friends with people from across the globe who we keep in touch with. I now always look at hostels before deciding where to stay. As you say they save you so much money so allow you the opportunity to stay longer or do things that you might not have been able to afford. I am sure that the teenagers will love it.

The Science Museum has a 3D Imax and you can get bogof on the 'Days out site'

I haven't been but maybe someone will say if it's worth it.

I have a disabled son and find that London isn't as good as other cities for free travel (if you are not a resident) so I would check it out well before you go as perhaps you can pre-register for a pass.

If OP has booked now for travel at the end of December/beginning of January, they are full price tickets, not cheap advance ones, and the return half is fully flexible and valid for a month on any train (off peak if it's an off peak ticket)

So not the slightest problem in staying on another day or few.

I haven't booked yet - I'm thinking of putting it off until late January or early February, as trains and accommodation might be a bit cheaper then (do they put prices up in the run up to Christmas?)

Cherisong, YHA isn't a bad idea, especially if I can get a family room. If we had to sleep in a dorm, that would be impossible as my disabled son has quite a few overnight needs - feeding, reflux and asthma, as well as a condition that imitates asthma to some extent (starts off coughing and ends up choking), so I need to be near him. Also, it could disturb other people in the dorm for several hours :o
