i've decided that now my kids are a bit older 14 & 15 that i'm not going to go mad at christmas and instead we're going to london for 4 days over new year to see the fireworks. So i've been trawling mse and there's been some great advice. I've just bought my return train tickets from Liverpool that were £56 return for the 3 of us and i've booked Premier in Euston - last time i went to london our hotel was in picadilly and it was too much of a hike - this time we want to arrive, dump our stuff and explore straightaway.

i'm especially looking forward to winterwonderland, i also want to go to camden shopping so although not especially central, euston's fine for exploring north london.

one thing we really want to do is see a show - we're not theatre people tbh but i was wondering about maybe a panto on new years eve then onto the fireworks.

so looking forward to it - anymore london tips keep me posted:T
  • candjsmum, I do use Tesco Clubcard - I've got £32 worth of vouchers, so they could go quite a way if they are x4 the amount, which I know happens with some attractions. I'll definitely look into using them.

asp746, what a good idea! Have a lovely time :)

i was just replying to say that although i booked premier inn at euston, i've cancelled that and have booked into the YHA in london central - tbh i'm a bit unsure about sleeping in a dorm but it's worked out £170 cheaper so i couldn't turn it down and also as it's full of travellers there'll be loads of people in the lounge & meeting rooms for the teens to hang out with.

you enjoy your trip too kingfisher and let us know how you get on:)

not sure if this will work for your kids, but worth giving them a call.

This is the reason I was looking at the site

only booked train tickets yesterday but they've come already AND altho i booked to return on 3rd jan the tickets are valid until 29th jan OMG as the yha is so cheap i think i'll ring them to tag an extra day in london as it'll only be another £30.

Some cheap advance tickets will say that that they have to be used in conjunction with separate seat reservation tickets that are for specific dates/times though, so I'd suggest double checking that this is not the case here before changing your plans....

I booked at hotel called Mina House, through Alpharooms. Worked out for 2 of us, b&B at £52 for us both. It's in the Paddington area so close to a lot of places we want to be. It might be crap, but for a few days I'm not that bothered. I'd rather that, than be spending ages travelling.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

If you want to leave luggage at the railway station on your last day it will cost £8 per item. However, there is a baggage depository at the Science Museum with a charge of £1 per item, "unlimited" items for £3. So, make the Science Museum trip on your last day and save a fortune on left luggage..

LOL, I did this at the Museum of London (which is great by the way, free and near Liverpool Street Station -Barbican tube). I queued up to leave my bag at Liverpool Street, I think it was actually £12 a bag there and I thought blow that and dragged my case along with me - put it in the safe area at the museum for a quid :) And ate my lunch in their fab restaurant.

If OP has booked now for travel at the end of December/beginning of January, they are full price tickets, not cheap advance ones, and the return half is fully flexible and valid for a month on any train (off peak if it's an off peak ticket)

So not the slightest problem in staying on another day or few.
