Same teacher

Hi there I've been lurking for a while, with interest in bsck to school topics especially and finally decided to post!

My daughter is 6, has just finished Year One and is due to start Year 2 in September. We found out in the last week of term that she will be having the same teacher in Year 2

I wondered if anyone has experience of this. She's done well with this Y1 teacher but she has been teaching year 1 for a while. I wondered why she might be moving as this does not happen in the school, everyone stays in the same classes.

I just wondered about the pros and cons of havng same person twice.

What do you think?

All primary teachers change year groups at some point. There should not be any negatives, and the positive is that the teacher already knows how the child works.
    Gone ... or have I?
  • My eldest has the same teacher 3 times through primary. I found it was easier when she took the class as she was used to handling them especially come the third time, the children seem to settle better at the start of term also because its familiar.
Sometimes i like to imagine that im living on the breadline as a single mum with 3 children to feed and clothe, bills to pay and very little time to myself........ then i wake up and realise im a princess with prince charming by my side and a lovely white castle........ oh wait

It can only be a good thing for your little one that the teacher already knows her.

Its complete guesswork until the week before summer term ends at our school - the teachers move between about 4 years (a couple of them have done year 1 and then year 6). My DD is getting the same teacher this coming year that she had a couple of years ago - and in my primary school I had the same teacher for 3 years.

Its perfectly normal, and the school managers will decide each year which teacher is teaching which class.
  • My children had the same teacher throughout the infants as the school went in for "vertical grouping" ie every class had a mix of children of all ages. It seemed to work well for reasons already stated - ie teacher knows the child.

Teachers will move every few years, just that it's obviously not happened since you LO has been in school. I think that it's a positive thing.

When I was at primary, we had the same teacher in in class 6 and 7, if anything we settled into the new year quicker, because we knew where we stood with the teacher already.
I can't remember any negatives, unless your daughter doesn't like said teacher.

~DD3 had the same teacher 2 years running.. the children were familiar with her and loved her to bits, she knew the children and how they worked and how to get them to work.. however, when it came to leaving the second year the teacher was devastated to be losing her class.. they grow up so much in those couple of years (1 & 2) the poor woman was inconsolable!!

if you were happy to have your child in the teachers class last year this year will be better.. they will miss out the annual 'getting to know names' and can jump right in..

Just be grateful it's a teacher you and she like. When I learned that the incompetent teacher who'd been off sick half the year was keeping DS3's class for another year, I expressed my concerns to the head! And was asked to put my 'issues' in writing. Teacher did not last the full year.

BTW this was not just a case of dislike: this teacher had been extremely unprofessional on several occasions, including breaches of confidentiality about pupils in the class, and unprovoked criticism of the governors for doing their jobs! Wasn't making a very good job of teaching either: I was hearing children read who'd been in that class for a year, and they didn't seem to have learned much!
