yep good fun at the auctions, I remember years ago at MK auctions we always put a pack of 'wetwipes' on the rear parcel shelf,
and the auctioneer would always say
'with the benefit of a rear wash wipe':rotfl::rotfl:
it was funny watching the mug punters looking for the wiper blade:rotfl:IMOJACAR

Well now you know why car trader charge more than the auction price for a car, they have bought it, at there own risk, checked it out, prepared it for sale and therefore you have legal comeback.
You have bought a car, with little or no mechanical knowledge, taken the only precaution you could and to get the car checked over by a mate.
However you have no comeback, legal or otherwise, other thank putting the car back through another auction.
I will give you a bit of advice, don't buy private entries at an auction as they are the worst pigs in the world, but as they are cheap, some take a chance, I even did.................once, and never again.
I stick to main dealer part ex cars, much better chance of it not being a pig, especially as I have experience at it, even the best drop a clanger, though personally, if I drove a car home with a burning smell, then it would get put straight back in or wouldn't be driven untill the oil leak was fixed, oil leaks are responsible for a lot of engine fires.
Going by your user name, it wasn't a Citreon by any chance, as buying an old Citreon at an auction without specialist knowledge isn't just loading the gun, but pointing at your head and saying, go on give it your best shot.0 -

That's why you look around the cars before the start of the auction! Let me guess, not many were bidding on the car you bought?
Regards,
Andy
Hi Andy - no dealers bidding on the car at all. In hindsight I'd guess they knew something I didn't.0 -

OP how much did you pay for the car
Paid just over 5k, it was a focus.0 -

Fortunately it wasn't a Citroen :rotfl:.0 -
Steam clean the engine bay, nurse it to a different auction and sell it again. It's all about maximising your return and hopefully it'll educate someone else.0
