preparing beetroot?

If I have posted in wrong forum can someone please point me in right direction!

I have some fresh beetroot, pulled this morning, from a friend and I have no idea of how to prepare it! I know it has to be boiled but for how long???

Thanks in advance

Hi kprice580,We cook our beetroot in a few ways wrapped tightly in foil in a shallow dish with 1" of water and tight lid in the bottom of a slow oven (when cooking something else)or microwave-bowl or jug unwrapped 1-2"water or in a slow cooker wrapped or not 1" water low setting .Times all depend on the size we only grow "babies"so 5-8 mins in microwave and 3-4 hours the other way.Check your instructions for the microwave see what it says :)

wash it, wrap it in foil and roast it for about an hour or so.
Skins can be just peeled off after that.

Larger varieties need slicing up if you want to freeze them apparently (never bothered myself).

Boiling turns everything red so i prefer to roast.

If you do boil it you twist the tops off leave at least an inch of the leaf stems attached and do not remove the root this will stop alot of the bleeding. Boil for 20 mins but that for smaller beetroots they are cooked when you can pierce it easily with a skewer. Run under cold water and remove the skins.

I microwave mine in an uncovered bowl of water for 10 - 20 minutes, according to size. Just pull off the leave stems but don't cut into the fresh or the colour will totally bleed out of them.

Love roasted beetroot - yum but when I peel it I wear marigolds as the purple colour does go all over your hands. So don't wear best clothes either when delaing with beetroot unless its just me that gets so messy? :o

I had some large beetroot last week, so cooked them in the pressure cooker, only 30mins and beautifully cooked through. Smaller ones I have cooked in the oven in tin foil.

I was amazed how well the skins came off once cooked.

I grow white beetroot for boiling, we just boil them for about 30 to 45 mins depending on size and then pull the skins off, then eat with a normal meal as standard veg. No mess and no red stains everywhere, they taste exactly the same.

  • Wke have had a good crop from allotment and we always cooked in microwave but one day tried roasting with courgettes and onions (also from allotment). They tasted so good roasted, we are hooked.
