Renewing photo on drivers licence

i would prefer if they phased out the paper part TBH
100% agree. I find it completely pointless.
They replaced paper only licences with paper and plastic, then told us one part isn't valid without t'other. Madness :rotfl:
I only ever carry my photocard, if I get stopped then I can easily produce the paper part, but last time I got stopped at the roadside the bobby was happy with the photocard only.
However, you couldn't hire a car with just either the card or paper part on their own.0 -
Until they find some way of putting penalty points on the plastic card and a way of anyone being able to read them we will be stuck with the paper counterpart.
but looking on the back only half is used for driving catagories.
surely points can be put on that section? its no more high tech than the paper part.
how do places like the USA do it?0 -

Given that when the court endorses your licence they write on the points with a pen, or a rubber stamp if they deal with high volumes, no you can't just write it on the back!
The plastic part is to bring the UK licence into compliance with European legislation. That's why the categories on the front aren't named, it's all 1a Joe Bloggs 1b 76c Some Street etc. etc.
When you get stopped in France, the copper doesn't need to be able to read English because he knows that 1a is your name and so on. The categories of vehicle are standardised too.0 -

but the issue of courts endorsing points can be addressed by the DVLA getting the license and printing a new one
the cost can be part of the points fine0 -

I agree too. My Japanese licence is just the photocard. They can write (yes write) things on the back or print new details on the front when you renew it. It also has a RFID chip in it which I guess the police or DVLA equivalent over there can read.
I never carry my paper licence unless I need to rent a car. It would just end up like one of those tissues you left in your pocket and put through the washing machine.0 -

I remember the state my old paper license got into. Especially when I turned 18 and used it for ID in the clubs :rotfl:0
