Mobile phone for India

Is there anybody out there who can explain this to me in very simple terms (I'm am totally technology ignorant).
I am travelling in India for a few months and want to be able to contact and be contacted by family at home. I live in the Channel Islands and most of my calls will be from here although some will be from the UK mainland.
Am I better to get a SIM card when I get to India or should I get one here?

from here m8 as its very difficult to get a sim in india if you dont know an indian national living there

But im sure if you ask the hotel or whoever your staying with can advise where a sim card can be purchased from

it is very easy to buy a sim in india, you do not need to be an indian national. just make sure you have some passport photos with you.

if you are going to a number of states, make sure that the chip will work in multiple states. i bought a chip in Bombay which then would not work when we drove to Rajahstan. Had a lot of issues trying to get this to work, which my driver was luckily able to sort out for me.

also if you go into any town it is very easy to find a phone shop.
