what is the best way to deal with youths obstructing the road? Common sense is obviously to slow down, yet, there is always the chance of car-jacking or damage done to the vehicle.

Throughout the summer holiday there has been several incidents ive witnessed of this going on and it is not confined to small children but older teenagers malarking in the middle of the street, in one case I saw a bus having to slam on its brakes and it hit the youth over. Its only a matter of time before, as frequently happens, they get themselves injured or killed, or cause an accident. As I left the scene I felt calling the police would be appropiate yet past experience shows they dont want to know or would take hours to get there. Is it even a police matter?

as a responsible motorist how do you/would you respond when confronted with this situation?

dip the clutch and rev the engine. They scatter then.

My mother in law used to try to hit them. Seriously, but if they got to the pavement she let them go.

Technically they're causing an obstruction on a public highway. Probably a ticketable offence, but whether the Police would actually pursue it is another matter.

Is there a Neighbourhood Watch scheme nearby?

I'd say run them over but then the police automatically pounce on you with charges like driving without due care and attention. The idiot kids/youths are never responsible for anything.

If we're talking about responsible motoring then there's nothing you can do other than attempt to stop. If someone goes into the back of you then hope that they're insured and they push you into the kids enough to give them something to remember why they shouldn't do it again.

Not sure if one would fit or be legal. Seems to work well here though http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7WaOzeDRoA&feature=related :D The nearest you could probably get and be legal is the Stebel Nautilus compact which is what I have fitted to my car.
  • I find if they're teenagers dropping 2 gears and flooring it works. My only concession is having an exit strategy if they're more ballsey than I suspect (somewhere to stop the car and knock 10 bells out them).

Has anyone tried sounding their horn?

The length of the note should be proportional to the danger and the scallies' stubbornness. They may flick you the Vs, and shout expletives but they still move as long as your horn is as loud as mine.

To be honest they don't move until you look like you are going to hit them, then they swear at you.

Honking your horn or revving your engine at them does nothing. It only works with adults.

And yes there have been cases of teenagers run over by buses. For some reason they are too thick to realise if a car is small or a vehicle large the vehicles brakes are likely to be sh*t, therefore drawling in the middle of the road means they are likely to get hit.

Part of the problem is that not enough children walk to school on their own nowadays until they are teenagers. If they did and they heard about or saw one child in their school be hit by a car they wouldn't do it.

BTW it's a problem in parts of London that has been going on for years.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
