Has Anyone Here Emptied Their Dog's Anal Sacs

Hope no one is eating their dinner as they read this!
My dog's anal sacs seem to fill up quite regularly. I've spoken to the vet who has advised a high fibre diet. No problems with this.
She emptied them out this morning whilst I watched. My dog was very placid, didn't swirm about so I wondered if I could do it myself.
Anyone done this?

Please don't try and do this yourself - it really is a job for the vet or the dog groomers who have been trained to do it properly. Whilst your dog may have placidly stood there it really can be quite uncomfortable for them.0

*LOL* ..... yup, and it's not a great job!!
Bear in mind though that your dog may have been placid and calm simply because you were at the vets and felt a bit cowed by that ... might be a different experience altogether at home if you try to do it!!
I've had a number of dogs who had trouble and needed it doing regularly so I've become a dab-hand from greyhound to tiny chihuahua ... (give me the chihuahua ANY day over the grey!!) ... the vet said I would save myself a lot of money if he showed me what to do so I could do it myself.
I've only got the little chihuahua now and do his about once a month which seems to do the trick and stops any further trouble.
I tend to use unfragranced baby wet wipes .... they're usually on a good deal in Home Bargains or B&M!!
I wouldn't recommend you doing it though unless your vet agrees to show you how (or do you know a vet nurse who might show you?) ... you really can hurt them if you don't do it right! Plus, they might never speak to you again!!0 -
I used to be a dog groomer and did this regularly, if you get someone to show you how to do it it is quite easy to do as long as the pooch doesn't wriggle. Hygiene is very important for both you and the dog though as anal glands can become infected.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. There is no reason why you can't learn to do it yourself, but best ask a vet or vet nurse at your practice to show you how.0

I watched the vet so often i decided to try it myself on my springer spaniel. no probs! you will FEEL where the anal glands are blocked - then its like a milking action (firm but gentle). any sign of discomfort from the dog and you are not doing it right.its not nice but its necessary and although my dogs vet was brill and didnt charge for consultation - the fees every month for emptying her bum were draining us.0

It is something you would want to get right first time, the smell if it goes all wrong and you get it on your hands or carpet is yuck!If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0

I do my dogs sacs every month and it saves me a fortune in vets fees.
The look on his face when they're done is one of pure bliss, sort of like popping a sore zit
Must forewarn you tho, get lots of kitchen roll or bog roll to hand cos the stuff can squirt out with a bit of force! So sort of cup your hand up a bit to catch the doings, sort of looks like a cross between weetabix and shredded wheat.
Apologies to weetabix and shreddies fans :rotfl:Be happy, it's the greatest wealth0 -
I have read many useful threads on this site and it has answered all my questions about life, debts, money, but Crikey Moses I never even knew you could do that to a dog! Poor doggie, you would have to be on really good terms with your pet to do that!
Good Luck OP.
Buffy (who is very glad she only has guinea pigs and Goldfish)Nevertheless she persisted.0 -
Best one was when my old dog's squirt covered vet from head to stomach in a neat line....!!!0
