Car Radio Unlocking

Hello.
Visited Renault today to get a radio code for my Renault car, but they said there is a cost involved of £17 for for a code!! (plus 45 minutes waiting time)
Surely they must give it to me for free? Or maybe someone on here knows where this is possible?

Hi, disconnected the battery without a thought for the radio code. Ford 6006E ser.no. M005371. Hope you can help. Cheers in advance

Why are these radio locked? How do people get the codes?

Isn't this like the mobile phone locking once it's stolen?

I probably have got it totally wrong though!
