This radio is VIN coded and electronically linked to the car. This is a job for the main dealer or the unit will have to be taken into a radio decoding specialist.

I've just bought my father in law a new car as his old one was drastically unsafe. Unfortunately it didn't come with the radio handbook and the radio is set to code,

It's a Rover radio - built by Philips I think

Sorry. Serial numbers beginning with a V are not available free. They are Ford dealer or radio specialist dealer only as the codes are not calculated from the serial number and access is needed to Ford's database to retrieve the code.
