When I press 6+2 nothing happens.
When I press 6 +1 I get the following sequence: MGP DJS 4-04 04-03-00. Is this any good or do I have to take the stereo out?

No good, You need to remove the radio from the dash and find the Serial on a label on radio:

I've noticed most of the serial numbers begin with M but I think the serial number for my car is: V186167

V serial codes are not available free as access to the factory database is needed. Try ebay for the best deal or go to Ford or a pro decode service.
