Thanks! .... I couldn't see this around in the thread ..but as it's 500 pages, it might be in there somewhere, so apols if so...but as I'm not very practical ...where is the serial number? and if I have to remove the radio to do it how do it? Is that easy?

If yours is anything like the 2003 unit fitted to my 2000 Fiesta then you will have a pair of holes either side on the radio fascia. When I was in the trade years ago we had two sets of prongs which were inserted in these holes(one set either side)This pushes the spring steel retaining clip away from the dash cutaway towards the radio allowing withdrawal.
Of course you can improvise if you are careful.Yesterday to remove mine I inserted four suitably sized allen keys and carefully withdrew unit with a bit of a wriggle. Some use welding rods/nails/slim-line screwdrivers etc but allen keys are hex profile and don`t bend as easily if good quality.
Serial number should be on sticker on top of unit.Mine was also on plate one side.
When you have jotted this down note how the clip arrangement exists for future reference and push your unit firmly back into the dash being careful not to trap any wiring. It should relocate with a resounding clunk meaning the spring steel clip has bit back into the dash void therefore securing your radio.
