Re your faulty radio....car radios have two battery feeds wired to them.The main one which is via the ignition switch and this powers up the radio when you switch it on.

The second one is a permantly wired battery feed that maintains the radio memory for the code and the station settings. It looks as though this second feed is missing so check any fuses, connectors or wiring before throwing it away.

It did turn out to be a voltage supply problem. I'm getting only ~2.5v at the direct connection until the ignition is turned on when it goes up to >12v. Diagram of fuse box in car manual doesn't correspond with that in car and so far as I can see, all fuses are intact so it's live with putting the code in each time I start up or pay for an auto-electrician. As a Yorkshireman, it will be the first option!! ............. unless you can help.
Fwiw either the station memory is not volatile or is maintained by the 2.5v - seems a bit illogical.

My son has just bought a car and the stereo in it is asking for a code.....it says on it volkswagen BETA , then on a sticker on the side, the number is VWZ1Z2X439063, there is also more numbers, 815 7648235360 and 7DO035152. If anyone can help with the code we would be very grateful. Thanks very much.
