Selling to a garage, Ebay or Private?

Hi All

I'm posting on behlf of my sister!

She has a Ford KA that she wants to sell. This is her first car and she bought it of me, so she is unsure of the best action to take. I'm not much use either as I have never sold a car privately before and normally trade them in for a new model!

She has a Ford KA (2000) which has done 75,000 miles, It has a good service history and its a Luxury model (air con, leathers seats, alloys, CD, electrics, air bags, central locking) It has an MOT until Nov and tax until Feb 2011.

Car runs fine, but she is off to Australia in a month and wants rid reasonably quickly!

She has put it on Piston Heads and has a sign in the car window, but no joy yet. A local garage has offfered her 750.00 (she never said she was in a rush to sell!), she has it up for private sale for 999.00. After looking on Ebay, similar cars seem to priced higher than this, even older cars that have done more mileage!

Is selling a car easy on Ebay?

What would people on here do? Sell to the garage, or keep hold and wait for a better offer via a private sale?

Many thanks.

£750 for a ten year old Ka. Take it for the certainty it offers. If she's off to Oz she'll have a lot of stuff to organise and this is one quick solution.

Throw it on a one-day eBay auction with a reserve, and point out it must be collected within 3 days, or whatever.

What I usually do. People don't turn up within the three days, they instantly get negative feedback.

As a seller you can't give negative feedback anymore!

    WHAT?

So eBay whack the fees up, PayPal have upped everything so it's hardly worth selling on eBay anymore anyway, and now you can't leave negative feedback for a bad buyer!

    GRR!!

She is tempted to put it on Ebay, very similar cars with similar spec have prices over 1,000 and bids on them!

She isn't in that much of a rush, I can sort out the selling of the car once she has left the country. I really want her to get the best price possible.

Is an auction the best way to go, or a classified ad on Ebay, have no idea what to do for the best!

Can you not still leave a negative comment in the comments box? You still have to click on 'positive' even if they have been a bad buyer though!

If you are being honest to yourself in what you're saying about the price of others in eBay then I don't see the problem with trying it on there. Starting bid of, maybe, £899.
Short auction and short time to pay and collect after it's finished as has been suggested.

If it doesn't sell there's still the dealer's offer to fall back on.

Welcome to a free market economy. If you don't like it, move to North Korea. I would have said China but even they're in a fairly free market economy now.

I wonder if they offered a lower price as she went alone and she's a young women? They said she would be lucky to get 750.00 for it! The KA is in excellent condition, no rust or dents which for a car of that age and knowing that Fords are prone to rusting is pretty impressive! Its a lovely car inside to, looks very smart!

Think she will put on Ebay, I've searched through 100's of KA's this afternoon and the average price for a similar spec, mileage, private sale would be 1,200. Its going on tonight when we've taken pics!
