I know what you mean, Diane, its not a daft question, but not an easy one to answer either.

As its been said its not so fishy as mackeral, quite mild in fact. We have it with either salad or potatoes and peas.

Edited to add, if your not sure, don't buy Sainsbury's basics range, if you've never had salmon that is likely to put you off for life.

Salmon also marinades very well - I sometimes marinade it in 2tbsp soy sauce and a tsp brown sugar, which keeps it moist.

I would second not overcooking it (I would say this for any fish) - if you're grilling it it only needs 10mins max. I do it on my griddle pan because you can see the colour change along the side of the fish, so you know when it's done!

If you're poaching it, just pour boiling milk over the fish, cover and leave to stand. The heat of the milk will cook the fish in about 10-15mins (when it flakes it's cooked) and you save money by not having to have the cooker on :rotfl:

My absolute favourite is salmon en croute served with hollandaise sauce. Mmmmm. I put sauteed spinach or leeks in betweeen 2 pieces of skinless salmon & wrap in puff pastry (shop bought - life is too short to make puff pastry from scratch). Bake in the oven.
You could make your own garlic & herb crust with stale bread to go on top, just like the Birds eye ones, but nicer cos it's HM.
Tinned salmon is nasty & nothing like fresh. Think about the difference between tinned & fresh tuna.

I hate salmon on it own but like it in a fish pie or something similar.
  • I love salmon, my Mum on teh other hand hates it ; she says it has a funny smell unlike any other fish:rolleyes: Well, it doesn't taste like any other fish either! The nearest I can match it to is rainbow Trout but a little bit stronger. Primarily it is a delicate falvour, not like white fish, IMHO it is delish & should not be messed around with too much! I love it microwaved for 2-3 mins in the juice & zest of an orange with a little fresh corriander leaf & served with lemon & corriander cous cous.

It's one of my favourite types of fish - that and swordfish - yum.

It's not slimy like some fish can be and doesn't stink like kippers or taste really strong. It's quite a "meaty" fish and as has been said, it has a delicate flavour.

Definitely don't overcook though as it goes really dry and not nearly as nice. I usually microwave my fish as I find it easier.

I used to dislike all fish except tinned tuna. My experience was mainly based on fish and chip shop fish though or frozen white fish. Went on holiday and decided to be brave and try something different each meal and so have now tried salmon, swordfish, monkfish, shark steak, tuna steak, red snapper. (over about 3 years now though - not one after the other!!)

And I like them all and they are all different to each other.

Go on, challenge yourself to try something different!!! You'll never know if you like it till you try it! ;)

Thanks, was looking at that the other day in Sainsbugs and debating whether it was edible or not. Didn't look too nice though  so decided to buy some cod instead! ;)
