I really want to try different types of fish, I have only ever had haddock or cod. I have bought Birds eye 100% salmon fillets with a garlic and herd crumb but are quite reluctant to try it. I just wondered speaking as someone who has never had salmon before what salmon tastes like, Is it anything like cod or haddok? im not too keen on overly "fishy" Fish (if that makes sense lol). I don't want to prepare a whole meal from scratch using salmon as i might not like it. Also what is salmon nice with? I thought maybe some boiled new potatoes and some vegetables? Also if you have any "fishy" ideas i'd appreciate it lol.
Thank you xx

How do you explain what anything tastes like?
It isn't at all like cod or haddock, but it is quite cheap so why not buy a little piece, poach it gently in simmering water for ten minutes and taste it. It is nice hot or cold, as you described with new pots and veg, or with salad0 -
Hi, Diane! Salmon tastes like, well............salmon!
I'd follow Fudgem's advice, buy some fresh from a fishmonger, and try it. It's lovely cooked simply, with fresh veg. Try poaching in milk, or wrap in foil with a bay leaf, slice of lemon, seasoning, and a sprig of dill if you have some, and bake in the oven.
Fish that has an overly "fishy" taste, probably isn't that fresh.

I love salmon, but don't have it often as it costs so much. It's hard to describe what it tastes like, but it's not a strong fishy taste.
I occasionally buy plain salmon fillets, coat a piece of foil with olive oil, put the salmon on and a topping(s) (chopped onion, herbs, lemon etc). Wrap it up and bake the parcel for about 20 mins at 180°C. Serve with new pots and boiled veg or salad - yummy! Here I go again on my own....0 -

I would say salmon is far from fishy in taste it's really delicate and light.
I bake fillets or steaks in foil (a smidgen of butter or olive oil underneath to stop it sticking ) for 15 minutes with a little parsley or dill.
Even the texture is different to cod or haddock, hard to explain but I would say for those that are not fish lover salmon is the the nicest way to try it.

Salmon is not like sardines, pilchards, or mackerel if that's what you mean by fishy
It is quite like trout if you've had that. Tbh I can't see why anyone wouldn't like salmon, it's lovely

Why dont you pop to a supermarket and ask for a small piece.
If you ask in Waitrose they will literally cut off a small chunk if you ask.
Take it back home and pop it in a frying pan until it turns light pink through out. You can then taste it and get a feel for it that way.0 -
Salmon is as cheap as chips these days, unless you want free range wild rod-caught salmon, in which case you will need a mortgage!!
If you find farmed salmon in a shop and it is expensive, the shop is just profiteering.
You don't need to pay more than £1.50 for a (200g) portion sized fillet.
If you've got a Morrissons or Tescos near you, get it from their fresh fish counter.
Bake in tinfoil at 180c for about 30 minutes, with a knob of butter on the top.
Serve with new potatoes and veg, or flake it and serve with rice 'n peas...
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.............we have salmon at least once a week!
I would say it has the flake size of cod and tastes like.....errrrr salmon!!
It doesn't taste anything like tinned salmon IMHO. I think tinned salmon is what puts people off salmon!!British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
Definitely get a small piece to try, or try someone else's. As someone who is recently getting into fish after years of not touching it, I find the taste (and texture) of cooked salmon too strong and "fishy" for me, no matter how fresh the salmon. Smoked salmon on the other hand is lovely. Yes I am weird!:D0

Salmon has a mild, delicate flavour, and is delicious hot or cold.
I agree that a very nice way to eat it is baked - but PLEASE DO NOT cook it for 20 or even 30 minutes as has been suggested. For a normal 'portion' size as sold in the supermarket you'd need no more than 12 minutes in an oven at 180c. With a little salt, pepper and garlic and a squeeze of lemon, wrap in a foil parcel and put on a baking tray, the fish steams and is lovely served with fresh veges.
Another lovely simple way is to pan fry the seasoned salmon in a little olive oil, skin side down. When you see that the colour has changed and the fish is cooked 1/2 way through turn it (the underside should be crispy) - take it off the heat, leaving it in the hot pan. Let it sit for 2 or 3 mins and it will continue cooking. (Cook Tuna like this too). I might add a little chopped garlic and parsley at this stage too.
Salmon spoils if overcooked and goes much drier and tougher.
Good luck and enjoy. (And I think I'll buy some for dinner tonight too!)0 -
I think if you like cod and haddock you will like salmon. I personally find that tuna is too 'fishy' and don't like tuna salad/sandwiches, but I love salmon sandwiches, sprinkled with vinegar and with cucumber. My DD1 likes me to cook it in the oven in foil with a knob of butter and just eat it with chips. I find this too bland and love it with new potatoes and parsley sauce. Mmn!0
