Maestro card - does anyone still issue them?

Hi Guys

Not sure if this is the correct place for this question!

Are there any banks that still issue Maestro cards? Or are all they all being phased out?

I travel to Germany to quite often and Visa and MasterCards are not normally accepted, however, Maestro cards are.

Does anyone know where I can get a Maestro card issued in the UK?

Many thanks for any help :)

I am sure you can get by very well in Germany with VISA or Mastercard, which are widely accepted. It is true that in Germany you are expected to pay in cash more often than in Britain, but there are loads of ATMs that accept VISA and Mastercard. NatWest and HSBC are switching from Maestro to VISA debit. Not sure that there is a big bank that will issue a new Maestro card.

Northern Bank, Yorkshire Bank and Clydesdale are the only ones that issue Maestro

The ONE Account is also moving to Visa Debit from Maestro in the coming months.

Not sure if this applies to all RBS accounts, although I suspect it will.
  • i have a maestro with clydesdale aswell theyve recently changed its number sequence from a 19 digit number to a 16 digit number with no issue number, might be relevent to know thought id fling it in anyway and its also issued with there basic account that basically 99% of peeps can get as for yorkshire bank its clydesdale bank with a different name or vice versa, whatever way u wanna look at it,

How can Germany not accept Mastercard widely and yet accept Mastro more often? Its the debit version of the credit licencee...!!!!!!?

I know one person in Germany, and he is a banker and has never mentionned an issue with CC acceptance at all.

I've travelled back and forwards to Germany a lot and I've never had a problem using either Visa or Mastercard in a wide variety of shops/bars/restaurants.

Maestro is being phased out and soon there will be a Mastercard Debit card.

The fact that more banks issue Visa Debit is because it's cheaper.
