Faulty HTC desire - how to get it repaired?

My desire seems to be having an issue with overheating +/- rebooting. I seem to be suffering from this issue:

HTC Desire hardware defect

I got it brand new, sealed off ebay. Would I be able to return it to HTC direct under warranty to have it repaired?

  • Oh dear, my HTC hasn't even arrived yet, and i'm already worried about encountering the problem :(

Quick search on google comes up with a bunch of forum threads about the problem. I think most of the people with that particular issue recommend sending it back to HTC.

I had this issue with mine, only showed up when using google maps, it would get warm and then start crashing, warranty isn't transferable unless you bought it from a business on ebay

see the thread on xda forums about this, i have commented on that thread as well. best to either contact htc directly as you bought from ebay. was it a business seller or a private reseller. do you have a bill. the guarantee would start when first sold, since it was from ebay how do you prove that it was a first sale and not a refurbished device. you might have problems getting a guarantee i guess. but best of luck.

all batteries and power sources heat up when using a lot of power. have you used only htc chargers (wall and car charger =/- htc charging cable) or have you used some other charger off ebay etc. all chargers might not have the same power output and pins etc might vary even on the usb-microusb cable. heat generation will be more in weak signal areas and also when the gps is being used and multitasking. there are loads of free apps for monitoring system and also temperature etc. i often find the temp above 37c when charging and might have even seen 40c once while charging and doing a lot of browsing / videos on the phone via weak 3g connection and also while travelling using google sat navigation (3h journey one way) while using car charger. but havent had crashes yet althought might have had one reboot in the last 3.5months.

are you using task killers or any apps that are keeping the phone constantly awake and CPU running hard. my CPU runs at 998MHz about 30% of the time and the rest 65% at about 245MHz and 5% time in between those numbers. RAM is used about 60% even when not doing anything as i dont use task killers and my EPROM internal memory is loaded with loads of apps and almost always getting low memory alerts.

are you using some cheap microsd card off ebay etc. are you using some cheap battery off ebay? there could be loads of reasons for overheating. Are you using some heavy padded or insulated cover for the phone. is the power cable fitting properly or is there a loose contact causing more heating.

what sort of temps are you getting when it crashes, obviously any circuit can get damaged if getting too hot. i do remember reading about a safety auto shut down feature if some bits of the phone have become hot.

have you fiddled around with the software of the phone or rooted etc or flashed custom roms.

is the simcard very old and contacts damaged slightly?

is the battery fitting the contacts properly or is there some loose contact causing more heat generation. is it a faulty battery.

overheating could damage circuits and guess once damaged then problems are more likely later on any electronic device.

just my thoughts. best of luck getting it fixed. read the xda thread on this issue. i am not following that thread presently.

Same thing happened to my son's phone. HTC have so far been very good and are picking it up today or tomorrow.
  • I am having the same overheating/re-booting issue and contacted HTC today, they advised that there is a fault with some of the motherboards in the HTC desire and that there is currently a 5 week wait for a repair due to no motherboards being available.

Fortunately I was only 3 days outside the 28 day exchange policy with phones4u and they have agreed to send out a replacement handset and collect my old one.

Is there an easy way to make this fault show if you have one the motherboards at fault ? I was looking to get a Desire in the next week or so ??
  • I am not sure about how you would get it to show if you had the fault.

I have been experiencing problems with the HTC desire for the last week or so but didnt think much of it as it only shut down on me a couple of times but over the past couple of days it has only been staying on for 30-40mins a time and then re-booting, it comes up with the HTC screen then continues to shut down and re-boot constantly until the battery is removed.

HTC will repair the fault as long as the phone is within the warrenty period but at present they have a shortage of motherboards and are advising that it is a 4-5 week wait for repair once they receive the handset.
  • see youtube videos of the fault being demonstrated on the affected handsets.

also see relevant posts on xda forum and also https://www.myhtcdesire.com about how to get rid of faulty apps and get out of the rebooting cycle. no need to pull the battery as you can do the same by pressing 'optical track pad + volume down button + power button' all at same time and that will have same effect as pulling battery. also learn how to start device in 'safe mode' to remove faulty apps, see the link to learn how to start in the safe mode. if i was you i would get rid of any task killers etc and only use htc chargers (wall or car) and not some cheap ones.

of course if faulty motherboard then get it fixed as some have got done on xda forums.

  • My HTC Desire suddenly switches off and is impossible to control so I have to take batteries out and wait for it to cool before reinstalling the battery and normal service, till the same problem starts up again with overheating.
