Sorry, I'm just picky. Only one click is needed for tabs.
    That's OK T4i. Maybe I should explain.

If you "one click" the CPU tab, yes, all the processes are ordered but, if you double click the CPU tab then the list order is reversed. Insted of having to scroll to the bottom of the list to see the processes using the most resources the "higher users" will be at the top of the list. Just trying to make life easier for the user here.;)

McShield is definitely known as a resource hogger.

Although you used Add/Remove Programs doesn't McAfee have it's own uninstall facility? I ask because that facility may remove Mcshield whereas Add/Remove may not.

Also you can open Task Manager again, highlight the process then click on End Process (I have a feeling the install/uninstall program won't able to).

Then return to Add/Remove Programs. Mcafee should then uninstall completely.

DON'T FORGET ... you must have a firewall and AV in place before you go online. There are other programs you should also install (such as Defender etc. you already mentioned) but these two are critical before anything else.

    From McAfee support site:

    'How do I Uninstall SecurityCenter?
Summary: This article provides the steps to remove SecurityCenter from your computer.

Note: Before uninstalling SecurityCenter, you must uninstall VirusScan, Personal Firewall, Privacy Service, and SpamKiller.

    Click on the Start button.
Point to Settings (XP users skip this step).
    Click on Control Panel.
Double click Add or Remove Programs.
Locate McAfee SecurityCenter in the list of installed programs.
Single click on SecurityCenter so that it is highlighted.
Click the Add/Remove or Change/Remove button.
Follow the prompts to remove SecurityCenter.
    Restart your computer.
McAfee SecurityCenter has been removed from your computer.

If for some reason, you have removed all of your other McAfee programs and SecurityCenter will still not uninstall, do the following:

Double-click on My Computer (on some XP systems, click Start → My Computer).
    Double-click on drive C:
Double-click on the Program Files folder
    Double-click on the mcafee.com folder
    Double-click on the agent folder
    Double-click on the app folder
Delete any files that end with .adf by right-clicking the file and selecting Delete
Use the Control Panel to remove SecurityCenter, as listed above. '

  • I'll check for McAfee Uninstall when I get home and run that if possible. I'll also try ending the process in task manager first as I think I may have overlooked that on the original uninstall.

What Firewall and AV would you suggest before I go online then over and above those i've already mentioned? I was going to install a couple recommmended in the "What security..." sticky post.

The advice on firewalls and AV in this tread is sound. Your call which you choose. I use AVG + ZoneAlarm. Others will have their own preferences.

This also has helpful advice on what to install ....

To help keep your system free of malware go though the first 4 posts in this thread opn a regular basis .....

Hope it all helps you get back to normality.

If at any time you are still plagued by malware you can't remove then scan your system with HijackThis and post the resulting logfile report to this forum for more speciific removal/repair instructions.

Set up my new Dell yesterday and removed all the junk from it.
Had a problem with McAfee but managed to remove it with "crapcleaner" and also used "regcleaner" to shift the stuff from the registry.
    AOL.Tiscali,McAfee,google toolbar,yahoo toolbar,euroart,etc,etc
what a load of old tripe Dell puts on them.

Also note there is a 90 day free trial of Norton Ghost 10.
This is partitioned on the "back-up" drive D which effectively reduces your C drive by about 20GB.
I`ve not tried to uninstall it yet but ticked to be reminded in two weeks time.
I think when it asks you if you want to uninstall and you tick yes,it does so and then asks if you want to move the free space over to the C drive.
Has anyone tried or had experience of this.
