In all my years of student guidance, I have never heard of the student handing over all their money to a parent so that he can then pay their bills for them. It beggars belief!

If your son is so good with money then he can put the extra £1000 into his own savings account (which he finds for himself, the internet is his friend) and manage it himself.

I've never heard of this either! What does it teach them? They need to stand on their own two feet.

[QUOTE I also cannot understand how Birmingham can charge £5400 for accommodation. I'll be paying less than that in London.[/QUOTE]

Birmingham halls are expensive. My son was in Shackleton three years ago and that was even more expensive, because he ended up in a non-catered studio flat (long story). Last year, my daughter was in Mason and the fees were in excess of £5,000. There is cheaper accommodation - it depends upon whether you want en-suite or shared facilities, catered or non-catered.

On the bright side, I am informed by DD that rental properties in Selly Oak (the preferred location for 2nd and 3rd years) is cheaper than in places like Nottingham or Leeds.

My DD is going to Birmingham City University, none of their Halls are catered and we are currently waiting to find out where she has been allocated. Prices range from £85 pw - £104 pw and you pay for 41 weeks
  • Oldernotwiser , It beggars belief that you cannot get it...My word you need to start worrying about your own life ma man. He is not repeat not getting me to pay his bills they are coming out of a direct debit plan in 3 quarterly term times so when he gets a student account this week from nat west he can then get uni to take them straight out of his account, at the minute he has not got an account but when and if he gets one he can sort it out all i said was i would pay it until its sorted to save him getting the first
loan and grant for about £2g and then forget to give it to uni , but he is sorting that out hopefully before he starts and the bank can get him a new account.

All I ever asked was simple advice and I really appreciate those who wanted to help.

As for the rest you people you need to really take life a bit easier , the tough guy image is ok but honestly some of you were a bit over the top so what wonderful parents you must be. I am going to stop mollycoddling him , get him down the mines and earn his crust , put him to bed at 8pm everynight and , make sure he only speaks when he is spoken to... Some of you are so self righteous it was unbelievable.

So heres the last word , much appreciated everybody and no matter what you write back thats me finished and no more replys. Remember Its a jungle out there.

    Dano.

I think wharever works for this young man and his family is acceptable. I have just paid £195 for my 17 year old's daughters next block of driving lessons on my credit card, she said she would transfer it from her savings tomorrow she doesn't get paid until 10 Sept, I don't pay card bill till 21 Sept, so we have agreed she will pay me on 10th. Explained to her that interest is due on my card after 21st - her grandparents were here at time and gave me a long lecture on mollycoddling, independence etc - I'm just helping my daughter out for a few weeks, might as well leave her money in savings - put away less money next month and pay me. I suspect Dan is doing something similar to help and support his son.
Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.

That was the same cost as the halls at Middlesex university. (I paid £100 per week for self-catered en-suite)

Hello everybody sorry to bother you all but im snookered about how much to give my son each week / month for allowances. He is going to Birmingham Uni in September and heres the deal... I have paid all his accomodation out of his loan and grant over three terms doing it by direct debits so has no worries at all when he starts and only needs money for living / food / materials / nights on the lash etc etc. I have also sorted out a sim card mobile deal with Tesco / Insured his goods etc / got a railcard /and a laptop so he has got most of everything he needs to crack on. I now have to give him a weekly allowance to keep him going as i dont want to get him to get into bad credit and just have a debit card and student account to try and make it all easier for his first year. But i am not at all clued up on what to start with , he is a decent hard working kid and will get a job as i know he likes to earn money on his own, but i just dont know what a regular amount is which is for food etc living costs. If anyone or any other people have been in the same situation on what you lived on bearing in mind all accomodation is fully paid up with no worries i would be grateful for any feedback what i should give him weekly. Any help is greatfully appreciated. Danny,.

From the child's point of view :) ...

I got the natwest account (Free railcard)
At uni have a part time job which gets me £30 a weeks, but i often missed weeks out as i chose when i worked.
My parents got me a laptop (i got it the previous christmas though)
My parents bought me a new TV along with TV licence for uni
They bought my contents insurance cover and give me £50 for freshers week.
Parents also bought all my moving in gear, e.g. pots, pans, bedding etc as well as my years parking fee of £150

The above were the 'start up' costs. Regular money i received was...

Top up for my phone (but i only used £10 a month)

    I would then get £25 a week (£100 a month) for food/drink/living/books.

I think that's plenty enough and i still had extra spends and went out all the time with that! I live near Manchester and went Nottingham University.

I don't see why people are having a go at you , but i do agree that it is beneficial for your son to take as much responsibility as poss. concerning his loans/accommodation.

To summarise, if his acc. is payed for.. i managed great on £25 a week, i didn't even touch my overdraft! But i was always looking for deals on moneysavingexpert!.. maybe you could advise him to do the same!

    Hope this helped!

Why are you insulting people unnecessarily?
Why would he need to do this, student loan for tuition fee is given by slc to uni direct, your son will not even be aware x money existed.
The halls fees will just be taken by DD, it's ridiculous moving all the money around.

I personally spend up to £100 p/w which I earn/earnt whilst working. My parents pay money into my savings account instead as I'd only waste it.

Is he going to work whilst at uni?
