An open coal fire is the most inefficient way of heating your house imaginable-most of it goes straight up the chimney.

Not when you are only heating the room you are in most of the evening and your CH boiler is as old as ours. It's a small sitting room and very warm and cosy. Most of what we burn are free logs we find.

...I have done some comparisons and I save around £199 if I go back to N Power LOL. Southern Electric told me when he called that it would be cheaper to switch from N Power. It wasn't

If he had told you it was cheaper to stay with nPower, would you have switched to Sothern Electric?

The salesperson was employed to sell the services of the employer ... and they succeeded. :T

Don't listen only to sales patter. Do your own research before agreeing to buy anything :)

Ok, so I go with a new supplier and save whatever the comparison site shows me. What if the new supplier suddenly increase their tariff ? This you can't foresee.

Unless you are tied to any deal, you need to regularly check the comparison sites to ensure you are still on a competitive deal.
MSE Martin often gives advice and good times to consider changing supplier, but it doesn't do any harm to check regularly too.

Martin says that in October some companies will be putting their prices up which would advise going with a fixed, capped rate. However, 2 years ago we were advised the same and a lot of us fixed prices when the tariffs DIDNT go up as predicted. I am not sure what to do. This is why I hate doing this because it's so complex and a gamble what you will get.

Hi hubb - You have your annual Gas & Elec consumptions in Kw -Go to 'switchwithwhich' and use the drop down menus to enter them as Annual use.
This site will give you all the alternative tariffs like the others, but by using the Terms & Tariff icons on each company listed, it will give you the detailed Prices and Terms of that tariff DIRECTLY alongside the tariff of your present supplier

I was cold called on Monday by Scottish Power offering me a capped rate with them I was not looking to change supplier but the issue has raised questions for me.
Currently I am with Southern Electric on their Go direct 5 plan
Cost of units with SP are lower than direct 5 but SP have another plan which is much cheaper an internet plan 11 and it is much lower in price.
I have done a comparison using the Kw units for the past year and all the comparison sites come out best with the online SP 11 plan.
I will have to pay a £50 penalty to leave Southern only been with them for 3 months. Changed from Atlantic and this reduced my monthly payments by £21 for the same estimated electric use.
Do you think I should cap or should I go for the cheaper option and pay the £50 penalty.?
Spoke to Energyhelp and she advised me to take the cheaper plan but ML is saying maybe to cap?

    Any advice would be appreciated

I would stay put. it will cost £50 to switch. Is your gas with an IGT?

Thanks for your response. I would actually save £165 to change so with the £50 penalty I would still save £115.
I am uncertain as it could be that whilst Scottish Power is much cheaper the prices could rise and be more expensive.

molerat advised you as early as post#2 what you need to do (with some later posts explaining how you can do that)

Have you done that? If not, what are you now struggling with?
If so, what did you discover and what further help do you now require?
