talktalk broadband. Slow as dial up
cyberstar
I'm currently using windows 98, 256mb Pentium 3.
My talktalk is sometimes quite slow. When I download or watch videos its ok, but when I load up some web pages it can be as slow as dial up. 8mb download speed should be much faster than this. Does anyone know why?

Check it out using the speedtest on adslguide.org.uk
You might not have been unbundled yet, which means you are still using BT's network and probably on a very high ratio of customers to line (100:1). Even still, you won't ever achieve the 8mB speed they advertise.Treat others as you would like to be treated :A0 -
same here cyberstar, you are not alone.
its been like this for about a week along with outlook being unable to send/receive the odd time.
going to see if it improves this week and if not contact them to see what is going on (if i can ever get through!!??)
the only consolation is my bill just dropped through the letterbox,£22 for everything, sorry but theres no one else who can beat that!!0 -
It was like that when I was with them over 2 years ago, managed to escape after 3 months without penalty.
TalkTalk should be avoided at all costs. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
Hi Guys,
Speeds up to 8Mb are a lot more sensitive than the previous 'speeds up to 8Mb'. Things such as not having microfilters fitted properly or having a faulty microfilter or even your internal wiring can really impact your speeds. I wrote a support article that may help you troubleshoot your speeds and pinpoint the problem.
Good luck!
Kind regards,

Doesn't alter the fact TalkTalk is an extremely poor service.
I was with Pipex and all the time I was with them, I never had a dropped connection or problem other than once when the system was down for a short while, speeds were virtually always the max expected.
Switched to TalkTalk, you'd get 15 - 20 disconnections an hour, DNS problems, email down, newsgroup down (I think last year TalkTalk just didn't bother getting it up and running again after it fell over yet again), downloads would crawl at 0.5k/s if you were lucky, webpages were slow. TalkTalk admitted their service was poor, gave me 150mb webspace as a softener, then 2 months free, then let me escape without penalty after 3 months.
I even tried their modem, the modem I had with Pipex, as well as the adsl modem/router I had (and had no problem with Pipex), but their service was still useless, they really are an awful service, and even after all this time, they still haven't improved, they just don't have the infrastructure.
Switched back to Pipex and everything was back to being perfect. Have since moved to Telewest broadband once the finally listened to me telling them for a couple of years I am in a broadband enable area, as neighbours have the service, they admitted I was right, and credited me with £60.It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc...
