Urgent!!! Eon demanding money 8 months after death of my mother!
Hi can someone help me please with eon the muppets? My mam died last year and l paid all her bills and let eon know final readings etc etc l got a few bills off them and paid them then a few months later a cheque come for 14 quid ld over paid dont know how they couldnt send right bill out in the first place sorry if this gets confusing bt lm fuming Thursday and Friday of last week l got 2 letters telling me they owed me 1p on both gas and electric l thought what a waste of postage and thought nomore of it... postmans just been and l have a gas bill for £31.95????? Ive rang up and might as well been talkign to a robot told them l am paying nothing else they have been paid!!! He kept going on about final meter readings from Jan l said l rang you and kept you inforned and the day the keys got handed in l gave you the readings!! AND I PAID BILLS!!! What do l do? Im upset and livid cant they let anyone rest in peace? If anyone knows anything please respond there supposed to be ringing me back soon!!!!!

Anybody got any help for me please? Just got all the bills out after the death she was on stay warm until she died. I cant believe this.. tellign me trouble with the final meter readings they were quick enough to accept the bloody money for them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!0

Hi niecsey - You just need all this after having lost your mum and having to deal with her Estate, but you just have grasp the nettle and do yet more paperwork
First thing to do is to check the bills you did get, to see that Final Readings and dates, match with that you gave them on the phone.
The next thing is, under what circumstances did your Mum occupy the dwelling she was in - Rented?
Owner Occupied?
If it was rented and she had a lease with some time to run, her Estate is still liable for the Utility Bills until the lease expires. If it were a Council/House Assn let, it's probable that it would have reverted back to them when she died and they are responsible for the bills from that time
If it were owner occupied, the Estate is still responsible for all the bills till it's sold - Even if it's empty there will still be Standing Charges running.
The demands from Eon should be fully itemised bills showing the meter readings and the periods they cover - If they are just for a sum of money WRITE asking for itemised bills - They have to supply them
If your Mum was in a let property that reverted the Council/Housing Assn as soon as you cleared her effects, WRITE to Eon enclosing copies of the relevant paperwork showing your Mum's and her Estate's responsibility ended on a particular day.0 -

I rang them (eon)the day after she died as she was on stay warm and gave them a reading then they told me to ring when l handed the keys back with a reading which l did. They sent bills out in feb and l paid it!! A few months later they sent me a cheque for £14 something cos l had over paid.... that was it.. until last week 2 bills to say they owed me 1p on both accounts! Then that gas bill today!! I am furious and no one has rang me back!! No doubt whiule there playing stupid sods an elecy bill will turn up next!! Totally out of order this like! Me mam was paid up with everything and thats why l paid every thing afterwards, there was no estate either. I am furious x0

It's unfortunate you didn't get the explanation you deserve from E.On customer service when you called them.
I suggest you make a formal dispute regarding the new bill. Do this in writing following the E.On complaint procedure

What you want is an explanation of how the latest bill has been generated/calculated.
Forget about that it may have taken 8 months, the company have 12 months to produce a bill, but you are entitled to an explanation that details the calculation and, if appropriate, why the final meter reading may now be different to the one you originally supplied."Now to trolling as a concept. .... She was fully paid up, yet she didn't have even one penny to her name when she passed away?
If that really was the case, then assuming your late mother was responsible for the bills (e.g. she was the only person named on the bill, she lived at the property alone, etc) then don't worry about it.
It's her debt and if she had no money, no one can get something that doesn't exist. You shouldn't have needed to pay anything out of your own funds."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Thanks for your reply but I PAID her final bills after l rang all the details into them that bill come in Feb and l paid it straight away .. and if l hadnt why did they feel that l had over paid and send me £14 back? Why send me 2 bills last week saying they owed me again? Evebn if it was 2p? My Mam only had money for her funeral expenses there was no savings what was left after the funeral paid her final bills lm not disputing that... somethings not right here at all! They send bills out and then they owe you??? Its not right someone somewhere hasnt a clue what there doing but thanks for your help anyhow!0

I am no legal expert but I would go with what premier says. In that if she alone was responsible for her bills then the debt was with her and that debt is not transferable to anyone else unless someone else is jointly named on the bill.
You may well end up getting letters from debt collection agencies but what can they do, I don't think you can be legally responsible for her debt if there was any at all.0 -
Thanks again x they did not bother ringing me back up so l followed someones kind advice on here and emailed them to complain. They have been paid and thats all there is too it! l paid the final bill!! Im an honest person l did everything that was expected and l think its a damm disgrace that companies can do this to you its pathetic and shows just how greedy they are!! Well they wont get another penny out of me!!! Regarding the £14 cheque they sent me 3 months ago strange but l only put it in bank 2 weeks ago... then all this happens? Hmmmm thanks again for all your help. I wont be letting them get away with any of it theyve opened a can of worms now and yes my Mam did live alone x0

I'm sorry to read of your loss and also your subsequent problems with Eon.
If your Mum died leaving no estate, as has already been said, any debts died with her - they are not your problem. I suggest you write to Eon with a copy of her death certificate, stating that there was no estate but that you nevertheless personally paid her final bills at the time and as far as you are concerned that is the end of the matter. Should you wish to do so you could also suggest that you feel you are entitled to, and indeed expect, an apology an explanation for their appaling conduct, not further bills, and hence should they continue to harrass you in this fashion you will be consulting your solicitors0 -
Thank you so much x I have also just found out the only thing that has to be paid when someone dies is their tax if they owe any!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for your help all will let you know what happens if ND WHEN thye bother tog et in touch again! x0
