I am just like you life-nit, I would be just the same. I was worried when I sent a large cheque through the normal mail and rang the next day to see it they received it. They had and I felt a lot better when I knew it was in safe hands. We are all different and have different personalities and ways of handling what we perceive to be worrying situations. Hope you have been reassured by this thread

From my experience in life, there is nothing wrong with being over cautious with finances, no matter what the unlikelihood of a scenario.

BUT, don't get excited about newspaper stories like this ... especially in August. Instead, use a bit of common sense and think about the fact that the clearing system deals with millions of cheques EVERY night and if every one was sent recorded delivery, the post office would not have a pension funding problem!

i would assume its impossible for anyone to cash the cheque by erasing the details on it, without leaving a trace on the cheque itself?

Yes, unless you wrote in pencil or fountain pen. If you're really that concerned you can stop the cheque and send another...but it would be a waste of time and money.
