Depends on the Card, the uni/college ones that you don't pay for are generally honoured in the locality of the uni as well as McDonalds, which is usually all our local students are interested in (Free McFlurries!!)
I don't think you could complain if it was a local card that was refused. That said OP can't really complain if it was an NUS Card that was refused either as it will have expired0 -

I study with the OU, and my course runs from Feb-Oct, but my student cards will only last from Feb-end of Aug - not very fair!
My card had an October expiry date on it even though I completed my course in June, this was three years ago mind, and I did continue to use it until October*shame*
