Second Hand Windscreens?

Options
I've got my MOT coming up and I think (please correct me if I'm wrong) I will have to replace my windscreen because I have a 3cm crack/chip in the drivers viewing area.

Has anyone got any experience buying second hand and if so how much cheaper is it?

you havent even said what car it is for
if its a modern car then it will be bonded
so you wont be fitting a 2nd hand one

In my limited experience removing and particularly refitting a windscreen to a vehicle is light-years away from what you seem to be imagining as 'remove your windscreen, get a screen from a scrap yard and stick it in the hole'.

Unless you used to work for Autowindscreens and still have all the equipment lying around in your toolshed I don't think it's even remotely a viable solution I'm afraid.

As others have said, unless you are a windscreen fitter (or know one) then it is highly unlikely you will be fitting a secondhand screen yourself if it is of the bonded type (which they pretty much all are now unless you own some sort of classic).

  • Only ever done one and that was pig of a Job with a Hyundai Pony pick up... Wasn't bonded either total nightmare and would'nt really fancy tackling another.

I wasn't intending on tackling the fitting part myself :)

The car is a 10 year old MK4 fiesta

What were you actually intending to do then?
  • Can you not do it through the Insurance?

    Do you have fully comp?

If so, it's £10 (or whatever your windscreen excess is) from you and Autoglass (or whoever) will tip up on your doorstep and fit brand new.

Unfortunately when I bought insurance I was only in the position to afford TPFT not fully comp :s

If I were to go ahead with this method I would find a local garage to fit it for me.

I could be wrong but I doubt most local garages would want to touch it.
