Most reasonable folk would say that much of the day to day M&S own brand food is pretty naff, overpriced and the shelf lives are short. I don't rate their tea bags at all, their gold ones are vile.

I love their Tea!! Seriously :p
  • My main complaint is that they take out full page adverts in newspaper to say how they are against animal testing etc, then you walk into store and they are now selling lots of Proctor and Gamble products!

The trouble is that most "customer feedback" is based on questionnaires that are written in such a way as to give the answer that they want.

    Wait, what?

That doesn't make any sense. The data from the survey we're talking about in this context would be entirely for the use of M&S, not given to anyone else. What possible reason could they have to sabotage it?

Your wording insinuates the reason is so that they have an excuse to remove M&S tea, but why would they need a rigged survey to do that exactly?

You talk about train companies poorly wording surveys as an excuse to get rid of buffet cars. Same thing, they can get rid of the buffet cars whenever they feel like.

True, but when they want a particular result, any "freehand" comments outside the "scientifically conducted study" will be discarded as unreliable evidence !

Again, you're not making sense. If they wanted a particular result then why would they bother with a rigged study?

If your answer is "So they can tell the customers their study said so", they still wouldn't need to rig a study - they'd just pretend they had one.
  • It is all part of the evolution of the "food hall" which, even 20 years ago, comprised only a small part of an M and S store. I remember my local had a small square shoved in the corner for food for years. It was where the carpet bit ended.....

Since then their food/drink square footage has grown larger...and larger...and larger. To the point where people can/do treat it as a place to do their "big shop". But because of "big brand" loyalty, these people would still need to go to another shop to obtain those goods. Bu introducing the leading brands, Marks is hoping for a one stop shop and is just trying to retain as much money as possible inside their food hall, sorry, supermarket.

There are benefits to the "supermarketisation" of Marks and Spencers - more multibuy offers, more BOGOFs, more half price items, more "meal deals". You never got them in the 1980s or 1990s like we get them today.

Our local has both PG Tips and Marks's own brand versions (several types) and I thought this was how it was meant to be. The profit margins on their own brands are higher than branded so I cannot see them doing away with their own brands altogether.

Same with the cereals and the cleaning stuff.....all brands sit alongside their own versions.

Well, see, I'm a tea snob. I'd rather go hungry than have naff tea, honestly ... if it's the week before payday and money's tight I'd rather raid Farmfoods and buy a dozen eggs, some baked beans and a couple of loaves ... then do a 52 mile return trip to buy some fabulous loose leaf tea.

As my dear old Mum would say ... "all fur coat and nae knickers" ... that's me when it comes to tea !

Suggest that you escalate and complain to Marc Bolland, CEO at marc.bolland@marks-and-spencer.com.

Good luck and hope this helps,

This is at all the M&S I have been to - its odd seeing those things there! It does dilute the M&S brand and is a complete mistake. They also do discount things in their home wares section - like £1 things. For me it means M&S loose their identity - I don't want that sort of thing - they will just be like any other retailer.

The real drive from this was the success of Waitrose in the last 10 years that has spanked them. Also the change is reflected in the move to be more like John Lewis in the non food areas - selling TVs etc in the larger stores. Thing is this doesn't work for me - its removing what they had as their core competences - quality controlled clothing and food.

But then if they aren't making any profit then they wont exist any more but if this trend continues it will turn into a place that I don't want to go to.
