I guess he can be quite challenging if he has 2 people with him whenever he goes out

Like many people with Autism, Steven can struggle to understand the world around him and things which would be commonplace to you or I might make him anxious. It seems sensible to have 2 carers or a carer and his Dad with him when he goes out to minimise his anxiety. That way everyone is happy.

everyone is blindly signing this petition, without probably having much if any understanding of autism. The young man needs 2 people with him when he goes out, clearly he is not the easiest person to be with at times.

I manage a challenging behaviour unit for people with autism, some of whom have 2 to 1 support 24 hours a day, but in the eyes of the nearest and dearest are little angels

Every story has 2 sides, and we only have one here, and really is a petition signed by a bunch of strangers on the internet, who know nothing about the real circumstances really going to have any influence at all over anything at all? I really doubt it, and would shocked and horrified if it did

Of course we as parents/carers of autistic children/adults have no understanding about Autism whatsoever. So clearly we have no idea what we are talking about or even have the remotest clue what we are talking about.

    Not everyone!

I have an understanding of Autism. I am Autistic. When I worked I worked with troubled teens - including many with ASD. (Part of my job involved screening for ASD , refering for diagnosis and setting up training/education plans)

My amazing mum has an understanding of Autism (does she ever!) she is my wonderful carer.

I am no angel. I don't need 2 people with me when I go out - but I do need one. If I have an 'episode' I have the potential for disturbing behaviour, foul language, and (thankfully rarely) violence. My mum can ease this simply bey her presence. With her I feel safe and therefore conform to what society deems 'acceptable' behavioural norms.

Before signing, I googled the name and read up on the case. I also passed details on to others to read up on the story and decide for themselves whether to support Steven.

I too am shocked and horrified. Not that Steven might be allowed to go home as a result of the case being made public. But at the insensitivity and inhumanity of the system that took him away from his home for no good reason.

Of course every story has two sides but we will never get to hear the other side due to legal issues. You know maybe nothing will come from the petition but at least people are trying to help Steven and his family. This case needs to be heard not brushed under the carpet and forgotten about.

This could happen to any parent/carer with an Autistic person within their household. I don't know about Mark but I personally would feel proud by the amount of strangers on the internet wanting to assist him, knowing this would spur me on no end if I was in this situation.

Well if only the government would do what they say they are going to do and ensure that more so called professionals are trained and have a lot more knowledge of Autism then may be that would be a start.

My daughter has challenging behavior and can at times be very violent, but she is my daughter so she will always be a angel in my eyes. I hope to god Mark gets the support he needs to get Steven home and if that includes a bunch of strangers showing support then that is fantastic.
This is an extreme case of some one being let down those professionals who are supposed to helping a family. I have lost count of the amount of times my family have been let down, not in a way such as this, but I never got answers as to why they let us down.

I would contact your local MIND. My brother works as an advocate for MIND and he challenges cases like your friend. He's even got one going through the High Court. Good luck.
  • Thank goodness 'a bunch of strangers' can inform themselves and make their own decisions! I presume Kai666 has never signed a petition for someone he/she did not know personally and knows personally every politician they vote for. Sometimes you just have to decide for yourself based on the information in front of you what you think. And of course, you have the right not to sign the petition. In the very first post, I did ask that people found out more information and, if they wanted to, signed the petition.

Personally, I am grateful that 'a bunch of strangers' have taken the time to read the post, read the information and offer support to a vulnerable young man and his family. It's often only 'a bunch of strangers' who can apply pressure to get things changed for the better.
