NW are not quite that bad.

In my opinion they are. Once they could not get me and Freda a mortgage, but the firend of the nice person who told me so, get her boyfriend to offer me one from kensington or something like it. It was more than double the rate.

I walked a ltttle furtehr down the street and changed banks and mortgage.

As for SpainTenDeer, it is Spanish!

Its weird with Santander, the customer service on my current account varies from poor to average, but my business accounts with Cater Allen (part of the Santander Group) are amazing, proper goog old fashioned service, If I ring them, I get to speak to a human being, based in bradford who can actually resolve and action and changes/issues.

I really wish whoever trains cater Allen staff would do the same to the Santander staff.

It's not about stealing your money, it's about taking over the account itself.

Banks have a legal obligation to know their customer, and once you have one account with a bank the burden of proof for opening another is reduced.

If you are here in the country illegally, once you have a bank account and the statements to prove it, you can use that proof of your "legitimacy" to access many other services.

It may not have made sense to you, but I can assure you that there are very good reasons for the member of staff to act as she did.

Bloody annoying I agree, but there was a good reason for it :)

It does seem to vary from branch to branch tho. I treid to close an old account in one branch, to be told I had to amke an appointment and bring in all sorts of stuff (which I didn't bother to do). Happened to be doing some banking at a different branch and the cashier closed it for me on the spot, with just the id I had with me.

I think Santander are terrible. Have closed my main account with them and now use the co-op. But I suppose people will always find something wrong thier bank.

Haven't yet had a problem with the co-op!

She wanted either my welcome letter (6 years old!!?!) or my annual statement (£11!!! I really wouldn't keep it!!!).

Um... that's not exactly a normal level of attention to paperwork. A normal, responsible person keeps all statements for 6 years, and it is grossly unreasonable and rude of you to expect them not to expect as much of you.

Not saying that they weren't difficult but it isn't unreasonable to expect you to have some paperwork related to the account in question.

I agree. Although I'm fully prepared to believe that santander is lacking in customer service, I'd never ditch an annual statement for an active account. You seem to expect santander to care about something that you yourself are rather slapdash about. As you argue, it's 'only £11'. Perhaps santander shares your attitude...! ;)

  • had a bad experience myself.

I put £100 in over the counter (normal current account). I give them the card.

Later that day i checked my account to see that the money didnt go in. I checked the receipt to find they put the money in the wrong account.

It all got sorted really quickly however, but makes me wonder how that happened seeing as this guys bank details were completely different to mine (it was a savings account).

Funnily, when they told me i could pay money into the ATM via an envelope. I said to them i don't do that because there is manual intervention required that i dont get to see so an error could be made! little did i know that part was taken care of regardless!

I've had very similar experiences trying to close Santander Accounts. More than one branch told me I needed an appointment to cancel, one wasn't available until another day. Another time I managed to close one account but the branch manager (who was behind the counter) wouldn't let me close the ISA that went with it (which I didn't want when I signed up in the first place and didn't use) as I didn't have proof of ownership. I had the debit card for the current account he let me close but not the cashcard for the ISA I never used. I also got the same lecture. I've also tried at 2 different branches to make my account into a joint account. First branch, 'oh we're understaffed today, maybe try tomorrow...' second, 'you need to make an appointment, how's next week?'
    Total joke of a bank.
Ended up making my Lloyds account a joint account, for which we did need an appointment but got one when and where WE wanted and the staff were not rude.

I don't disagree with you, this rant was after a series of annoyances, and if Santander shares my attitude we're all pretty screwed .
My rant wasn't so much for the specifics of what they wanted, it was due to the amount of ID, both Santander and official, I had on me at the time and the abrasive cashier.
