Ahhhhh!!! Why is Santander so very bad!!!!

Options
I just wanted to close my ISA, it had £11 in it; I'd had it 6 years and never used it.

(I also have a grudge against them for huge fees, making me redundant, withdrawing my overdraft with no pre-warning and generally being a pain in the !!!! on any transaction I've ever wanted to make! But that's a different story.)

I had photo ID, all my bank cards, including my Santander Current account card.

But no, that wasn't enough to prove the ISA was mine, despite the matching details of my current account. She wanted either my welcome letter (6 years old!!?!) or my annual statement (£11!!! I really wouldn't keep it!!!). In itself this was a minor annoyance, she can't help Santanders 'inconvenience the customer at all costs' procedures. What got me was I made an offhand comment, exactly quoted 'that's a bit weird but oh well', and the cashier then proceded to lecture me on the fact that it wasn't weird and how anyone walking in could just steal my ISA (of £11?).

I was going to point out that she broke DPA by telling me there was someone named Christopher with an identical ISA with the same DOB and surname as me. She did this while trying to find my ISA, but I was nice enough to know that she would actually get into a lot of trouble for that (or should), so held my tongue and left politely.

God, I hate Santander so much.

PS: Yes I am closing my Current account with them ASAP. :)

Feeling a little better now :rotfl:

(*Unless it's Santander. The branch says they sent you an umbrella 3 times already and don't understand why you don't have it yet and want it back right now!!!)

I did bank with Natwest and whilst trying to withdraw my savings they told me that I didn't have enough ID. I had passport, photo driving lisence and two bills. But there financial adviser could ID me in the meeting room, !!!!!!!!

Then it made sense, the FA was able to ID me providing he was allowed 10 mins for a sales pitch. Now bank with Co Op and cant fault them.

Was this in the Newcastle-Under-Lyme branch? I saw someone having a very similar problem. She walked out after saying "So, you're protecting my money from me. Thank you very much".

Are you called Christopher? I don't see the signifiance of the same DOB and surname if your name is...... Mavis or Albert; it's a weird thing to tell you.

They should be able to tell on their system if the owner of the ISA is the owner of the current account of the debit card presented. I know when I go to Halifax (who are lovely!) they swipe one card and get any of my Halifax accounts up on the screen which are linked to my "file".

I've had trouble closing a Santander account. They just can't seem to let go.

NW are not quite that bad.

I opened a Regular Saver on line. Tried withdraw cash but would not let me remove the last £1.oo, had to go into branch etc.

I can open online, so why not close on line? Security don't make me laugh, what a crock .....

I totally agree - Santander are the devils spawn!!! DH and are both currently moving our ISA's into a different company - I hate to think how long they are going to take to do that but I've warned them that, if they take more than the specified 30 days, I will expect them to pay me interest.

We've already closed down all our other accounts with them - with much the same trouble the OP had re ID. They even demanded my passport as ID last year when I wanted to open a new ISA last year - even though I already HAD an ISA with them, a current account and they were holding my house deeds.

    A rubbish company.

  • I have a savings account and an ISA with Santander. (I had them with Abbey before the merge). There was very little in either, about £11, but I needed to re-activate the accounts as they had not been used for a year. I went to the branch with all correct documentation and was told new card and pin number would arrive soon.
    Nothing.
I went back to the branch and told them the problem, but there was no record of me having been in before (apparently!). So no-one had sent me anything. This time they would send out a new card and pin number.
I received the card within a few days... but, guess what?... no PIN number.
This was a couple of months ago and I have not yet been back to the branch as it is not near me .. requires a couple of hours travelling. I have to go in person because they need to see my documentation again.

It is costing me more in fuel than I have in the combined accounts to try and sort this out, but they won't get to keep my £22 !

I think what made the experience annoy me more was that I went into HSBC with my wife where she did a similar transaction with same ID and it seemed so easy for her. :)

I know it isn't a big deal, it was just funny she revealed someone elses personal details accidently, whilst being so difficult and confrontational (IMO) to me.

My old man had a lot of bother trying to move an ISA from Lloyds to ING. Lloyds kept messing things up and saying he hadn't provided them with enough information. I think it took about four trips to a branch to sort it out.

You're lucky, they have lost my account, very conveniently with the move from Abbey. :( If I ever get my money back, it is leaving with me!
