John Lewis have a tv for sale that includes a 5 year warranty. I would like to buy this tv but my nearest JL - Reading, is a city centre site and I don't fancy having to carry a big box to my car.

John Lewis in Reading keeps its stock in the warehouse not in the store. The warehouse has parking. (If you know Reading its over the other side of the IDR opposite the Oracle Shopping Centre)
Im sure this is where you would collect it from.

That's exactly right- I have shopped in there and they have offered to have large items in the warehouse ready for me to collect at my convenience- I'd ask in store.

The price of a TV should not be a reflection of how long it would be expected to last.

I cant really see the need for an extended warranty after reading that!

I agree with you on the fact that other than the "convenience" of having a piece of paper to cover you (plus the accidental damage cover etc) that the current consumer protection law will be sufficient for most people but if you dont have a warrenty then expect to have a long arguement especially as the law simply says a "reasonable" life expectancy without any guidance on how this is to be calculated and so therefore it will ultimately be up to the judges to decide what reasonable is and for case law to be established.

I do have to agree with the other poster though that the value of the item is most likely to be considered as part of the "reasonableness" of the life expectancy as if I pay 10x the amount for an item than the budget model I would reasonably expect that some of that extra money to have gone into durability. There is no write or wrong answer on this of cause as the amount of case law is currently so little and fairly low courts that precident hasnt really been set... the links that you gave doesnt mention the price of goods at all nor do they give any view on what the test for a reasonable life would be.

To the OP - a) why the hell would you ever want to touch the likes of Dixons Group or Comet any way? b) remember of cause that john lewis do do price matches and still include the 5 year warrenty (which every one I know who has claimed on it has been very possitive about) - there are a few other sites (eg https://www.avforums.com) where users have compiled a list of which john lewis stores will frequently price match other retailors including internet only ones as this does vary greatly between stores. Quick check on https://www.Pricerunner.co.uk and you should be able to get the cheapest price from a reputable store and a 5 year warrenty for your efforts

  • I bought a TV about 4 years ago from JL in Bristol. Earlier this year it stopped working so I phoned my local JL which was now in Newcastle (moved house you see). They came and collected the broken one, dropped off a loan TV and then returned the repaired one a week later. Brilliant service.

You might try asking JL to deliver a TV for you. We live about 60 miles from the Newcastle JL and they deliver to us for free. A great shop.

    Epiphone, I agree with you:

The 'reasonable time' requirement is open to interpretation, and some retailers do still believe that a reasonable time for a tv to work is one year (or less!).

For an example, a few years ago I bought a £150 CD Walkman from Currys. It broke in its second month of use, and Currys said that the reasonable time for a Sony Walkman was twenty eight days!!! It took a big fight to get anywhere with them, until in the end I went straight to Sony who promptly replaced it.

I agree with those that say not to touch any other store when you can order from John Lewis. They may not be perfect, but they're the closest thing to it!
    Gone ... or have I?
  • I would buy from John Lewis or House of Fraser department stores over Comet or Currys. They have better customer service, you can get them to price match if they are not the cheapest, the offer 5 year warranties and they deliver.
