"We don't price match warranties"

Is this the mantra for employees of Comet and Currys?

John Lewis have a tv for sale that includes a 5 year warranty. I would like to buy this tv but my nearest JL - Reading, is a city centre site and I don't fancy having to carry a big box to my car.

So I went to currys first, Same tv £20 cheaper, but the warrnty for 5 years is a whopping £229. A Helpful Assistant (HA) was nearby. I explained that JL do the same telly I said for the same price for the sake of 20 quid.

ME: "Will you price m...."
HA: "We don't price match warranties"
ME: "Do you want to sell me the telly?"
HA: "We don't price match warranties"
ME: "OK bye"

Same story in Comet, although they did actually take the time to explain that their warranty was far superior to JL's (anyone have info on this?)

So I went to see the sales manager SM, and explained again

ME: "JL are doing this telly for the same price* but with a 5 year warr...."
SM: "We don't price match warranties"
ME: "Well if i take your warranty, that makes yours £200 more than JL's"
SM: "We don't price match warranties"
ME: "Well will you discount the tv, if i buy the warranty"
SM: "Only if you've seen it cheaper elsewhere"
ME: "Hmm. It's quiet in here today isn't it. I bet John Lewis is busy, bye..."

anyone ever got Currys or Comet to price match John Lewis?

  • Why not get John Lewis to price match the TV with the Currys price and use the £20 saving to pay for it to be delivered ?
  • Don't forget that you (effectively) get a free 5 year warranty with all TVs purchased anywhere as part of your Statutory Rights and the reasonable expectation that a TV should last 5 years. This is why John Lewis make a point of advertising it, they have to do it anyway. Currys throw in a few bells and whistles to baffle their customers into paying for a freebie.

Oh and your TV will either go wrong in the first year, or sail straight through those first 5 years trouble free. THIS is why extended warranties are so lucrative.

Having said that. Get the product from JL and get them to price match. Their warranty may not be so fancy but their customer service is usually light years ahead
  • You'll find that most places won't match warranties as they will often cover very different things.

From memory, it is not possible for a DSG store to alter the price of a warranty / insurance policy. They can discount the product although it would be a very silly thing to do.

To be honest, the company would probably be better off not selling the product than it would by giving you a free 5 yr warranty.

PS - It's not the sales assistant's fault, if you want to make a point about this, you would need to contact head office.
  • 1. Is the TV the same price on the John Lewis website? A lot have free delivery with them.

    2. Ask in the John Lewis store if they can do you free delivery.

Delivery is usually free from John Lewis stores - even for the smallest of items! Only potential problem is they normally specify which day of the week delivery will be.
    Gone ... or have I?

None of this is correct I'm afraid. Nothing comes with a "free" 5 year warrenty. In a nutshell an item is expected to last a reasonable time. A case could be argued a £4000 TV should last 5 years, but a £29.99 special would not be expected to last that long.

John Lewis do not "have to do it anyway". You receive a 12 month warrenty at the time of purchase. Anything after that and the onus is on the purchaser to prove there was a defect at time of purchase.

I (and the law) disagree with you

The price of a TV should not be a reflection of how long it would be expected to last.

I cant really see the need for an extended warranty after reading that!

Lipidicman is absolutely right. I worked on a masive computer project about 8 years ago and and the failure profile was remarkable. It spiked in the first year, negligable in years 2 -5 and then began to climb in yrs 6 and 7 but more than 50% were still working in yr 8.

Would that this were true. I bought what I thought was Mitsubishi TV (was a Bush inside - !!!!!!) It first broke 13 months after I bought it and then again 14 months later.

Edit - and I would have taken it back to the shop but the shop went bust quicker than my tele!
We all evolve - get on with it
