Can you claim working tax credit if you have no children ? My son earns £200 a week for 4x12 hours shifts (48 hr week). He pays £66 a week to the CSA off this. If he gets married and moves in with his partner, the rent alone is £75 a week, which is half their net income.

you can claim working tax credits without children as long as you are over 25. go to www.entitledto.co.uk to put in income etc and this will give a good idea of any award he may be entitled to.0

Does the partner not work?
How old is your son? Your calculation would mean he is earning well below minimum wage.Gone ... or have I?0 -
He's a security guard and works 4 on/4 off, so that is not really a 48 hour week is it? I cant work it out. Is very odd shifts. TY clb.0

Ok sorry
The full story (because as usual things are complicated) is that his partner is very seriously ill and has at most, 5 years left. He wants to get married and move in full time & look after her. She says no because they wont have enough money to live. He pays £66 a week to the CSA, which leaves him roughly £140, and the rent on her flat is £75. Plus she needs the heating on constantly.. so they obviously cant live without some sort of help. The two of them are in shock at how things have turned out and neither of them thinking clearly, so I'm just trying to explore options here.

hi, sorry to hear of their situation, it sounds very sad. If she is seriously ill needing looking after have they looked into Disability Living Allowance to cover her care needs? best wishes.0

but if they live together he obviously wont pay maintenance.
theyd get CTC and WTC and if she is terminally ill theres a good chance she'd get D L A without too much trouble.
hope everything works out for them.0 -

Also check here http://www.csa.gov.uk/
as he should not be paying more than 25% of his income, even if he has 3 or more children. If they spend more than 52 nights a year or the cost of travelling to see them is high, then this is reduced. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Yes its very sad, she is only 41. Many thanks for that x The CSA payment is for a child he never saw, that a former g/f had many years ago. She moved away to London and he never heard any more until last year when he got a demand from the CSA. I'm trying to sort out the money and see if it would be possible to let them get married without having to worry about the money going to hell..0
