The new Tickle Me Elmo toy T.M.X. Elmo from Mattel Inc.'s Fisher-Price Division, which is already proving wildly popular in the United States, was not included in the British "Top Dozen" because it has only just been released.

"It was absolutely top secret. We were buying blind. I think they are only bringing 45,000 into the country so we don't want to highly publicise a toy parents cannot get," Grant said.

"It has been a restricted release. They have been changing hands on eBay for 50 pounds -- for an item that is retailing at 35 pounds. That just demonstrates the demand."

It was released worldwide on the 19th of September, the UK and US got it at the same time. You know I suspect it's nothing to do with the limited supply, and far more to do with they didn't expect there to be a demand, and it's caught them napping, and short of supply. I mean since when has the toy industry considered the parents wishes other than selling to them? If they considered parents they would push everything so much in the 3 months run up to Xmas (or is that 11 months run up to xmas)

Apparently they made 700,000 of them and thought that would easily suffice until after Xmas. Wrong. I know people say they could just get lots more of these made at short notice, but it just doesn't happen like that in the real world. Hven't checked but I suspect these are made in china/Far East to keep costs low enough to be able to sell this technology at less than 20 quid in the US and STILL allow all the various distribution channels they go through to make a profit. They will also have to be shipped on the 'slow boat' to keep costs at a minimum and that takes TIME. I'm no expert but I reckon the reports of no more of these coming in before Xmas are accurate.

  • I just popped into my little local toymaster store for some playdoh for the kids and there sitting on the shelf were 2 TOP SECRET Elmos at 34.99 each I bought 1 for my youngest for christmas - unfortunately, being a single mum of 4 I do not have the spare cash to buy another even to sell it on!!

all I was saying is don't limit your looking to the big names (woolies, argos etc.) I may not have got the online discount but I have got it at home now ready for a very pleased little boy!!!!:j

The demand may seem greater than it actually is at the moment, as people are stocking up to sell on over the coming weeks. The Elmo word seems to be getting some airtime now so may be this will end up to be a self fulfilling prophecy
  • What do you all think about the Barbie doll which comes with a tmx elmo ?

Seems to be going well in teh states so reckon there will be a market in sunny UK ?

I want one for my daughter but the only option is to buy from ebay but I won't be doing that, I can't find a retailer that sells them in the UK.
