Free calls to 1899.com from Orange?

I tried to call the 1899.com access number from my friend's Orange mobile.
I used the 0808 170 7474 access number. I didn't get any message from Orange saying that I would be charged for calling that number. Is it really free to call from Orange mobile? If so, it means that from Orange mobiles you can call UK fixed lines for free at any time (3p connection charge each time). And at weekends, UK mobiles cost 2p/min.

This sounds too good to be true!

Yes I can confirm that both 1899 and 18866 are currently both free on Orange via the 0808 numbers.

Good tip is that you can store frequently dialled numbers on your phone with the 1899 prefix to save you on time, by using the "p" on your phone (normally press * button 3 times). eg if your friends number is 02012345678, store it as number "08081707474p02012345678#" (obviously make sure you keep the original number if you want to text it!)
  • As far as I am aware this is just for Orange contract customers rather than just Orange customers, which isn't clear from the above posts.

    Unless someone knows different?

    :)

Yes sorry, forgot to mention that 0808 numbers are only free to Orange contract customers (on most tarriffs!) but not PAYG.
  • Hi
Can anyone please help before I go off calling.
    I asked Orange about calling 0808 170 7474 and I was told it 10p per min/
Im on Orange pay as you go 200 from e2save.com

Have they misquoted me? Is it really free?

    Thanks

Is that a PAYG or a contract tariff ? If it's PAYG then no, it won't be free.

If it's a contract tariff, it's only free if it's one of Orange's own tariffs, not an OVP or equivalent.

Tesco Mobile PAYG customers can specify any 3 numbers to be charged at 10ppm. This means that these customers can register the 18866/1899.com London number and route their calls for about 11ppm. Mobile to mobile calls would be 12ppm on Saturdays and Sundays using this method.
