:) not quite flowing down the steet - but a beautifully crafted mound above the pot rim. I have now scooped the top layer out and put in another pot for some more soaking....

They seem to take longer to cook when they're old, so don't panic if they aren't done when you expect.

Yes, that is the voice of experience. 2007? Nothing!! ;)

    Hi Suered

I would have used them too! I soak them for 24 hours (i think it was Swan who advised me that?) , bring to the boil , then simmer for 1.5 hours (i think ?) . I freeze them in a bag and use from frozen. If of course you are in any doubt, don't use them! :D

Chickpeas may give you some ideas on how to use them. You can't beat home made hummous! It freezes well in ain ice cube tray too:j

I'll merge this with the food safety thread later
    thanks

:DThey're still soaking as I have to go shopping for other bits of hummous recipe. I think I will definitely freeze some for later - not sure when I can face doing this again.

Meanwhile I have been gainfully employed preparing cat's a la carte menu involving heart/liver/kidney/chicken thighs - chop, chop, chop, portion, portion, portion, and then all in little individual tubs for the freezer. I think she was saying something along the lines of "hurrrrrrrrrrrrrry UP!" the whole time:) Still, she now has 18 meals that I'm praying she will scoff as opposed to the commercial cat food disdainful sniff and walk away followed 30 minutes later by 2 hours of "But I'm huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuungry, Mum" wailing. My extremities are crossed.

This sounds all too familiar... except mine turns up his nose at it... then scoffs is down in record time and then moans until his next meal. The way he behave you would think that he was a scrawny slip of a thing rather than the rotund bruiser that he is!

It's so handy freezing them. I just defrost with boiling kettle water for two mins, or put them in cooking dishes as is. Once you have done it a f ew times, it really becomes less hassle to be honest. I thuoght it was really faffy to start with! :p

What do you need for the hummous recipe? Most things can be adapted/replaced :)

Home made hummous is so tasty !

:rotfl:Visions of chickpeas flowing down the street now!

I use out of date dried food all the time they never used to put dates on stuff like that, just a ploy by the food manufacturers and supermarkets to get you to throw perfectly good stuff away.

I have seen questions about whether potatoes are safe to eat after the best before date on here before now:eek:
When I was young, my parents used to buy a box of apples, oranges, carrots, potate and onion in the Auturm and kept them at about 0 degree in the celler. They used to keep during the winter so why not!?

Zippy - it's just the lemons - not a single stall had any so will have to go to the dreaded Mr T. Oh - and the balsamic vinegar. I may throw in some sesame seeds as it's Weezl's non-tahini receipe.

AH! I always keep a bottle of lemon juice lying around - i do think it needs it . I don't use balsamic myself. I blend chickpeas with tahini (as i have it , i wouldnt buy it specially), garlic, chilli, cumin, natural yoghurt, lemon and a good dose of black pepper. I might have to have some now! I just play about with it until it tastes right
