Microsoft .NET problem on an xp machine

Hello
A while ago my XP desktop developed a serious fault and I ended up having to reinstall windows.
Since then whenever I've tried to do certain things I would get a warning message that I needed Microsoft .NET v2 or higher. I know that that was installed but it appeared to be damaged and would only recognise v1.something
I finally got around to tackling it today and I've deleted v2 that wasn't working (after trying to repair it) and tried reinstalling but the installation kept failing. After much searching of Microsoft's support pages I tried installing v3.5 but that failed repeatedly too. As a last resort I completely uninstalled .NET and tried to reinstall but yet again it fails during the installation process.
Can anyone assist?
