its a hard age
frustrating for them as they cant yet talk and tell you what they want / how they are feeling and want to get about but cant ,or not very well
they can be very independent which just makes life for the parents very hard !
i agree with BS in not giving too much attention for it,move away from him ,making sure he cannot hurt himself ,no eye contact and carry on doing something boring ! he will get the message that throwing a strop doesnt gain him anything and it should ease
takes a while to get the message though ! and of course when they are out of the house its another story, you cant just ignore them for fear of people looking and judging !
distraction works for some children, worth a try
and if all fails use good old bribery, fab for older toddlers

hold his arm ,say a firm NO ! and put him on the floor away from you etc
keep doing this each time he hits / scratches / pulls hair etc
they think its a game but if you are firm he will learn

our dd did the same thing at thirteen months.
I used to remove her from the situation (normally not being allowed to wreck a display in a shop) and if she continued to throw a strop I'd put her over my shoulder in a fireman's carry and go with her kicking and screaming back to the car. I always stayed calm, didn't shout, didn't try to bribe her with sweets/rides etc.
She would inevitably fall asleep in the car on the way home and wake up refreshed and her normal sweet self.
People have commented on how well behaved our dd is (she's now 7) and I always tell them we let her know who the bosses were from an early age.
In short, we're the bosses- they won't get any rewards for screaming.:eek:Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19
