or maybe check out their forums, they suggest various ways to get the local number equivalent, either the freedom of information act, or saying you are calling from abroad and you cant dial an 0870 number, and pray that someone feels sorry for you and gives it to you

    Hi there!

I'm at Lincoln University (second year now), but I lived halls/courts last year and had the exact same issue with the phone system they use. When my parents rang me it cost them about 8p a minute or something, leading to something like £1 per phone call.

    Very frustrating.

However there is light at the end of the tunnel, go to Tesco and buy one of their Internet Phones, they probably cost around £10 now or something, and just get your son to plug it into his computer.

If you get one as well, you can call him free, or visa versa. Tesco assign you a local number for your phone so the calls from landlines will be cheaper.

Don't bother with the NTL phone system for incoming/outgoing calls, it's a waste of time. Once I used up the "free" £1 worth of phone credit, the only thing I used the phone for was calling other people in halls (which is free), but other then that, just don't bother.

  • Try https://www.saynoto0870.com and type in the name of your university, or just the city name. If no joy try the unverified listings ;) at the bottom of the search page, hidden in an obscure place where nobody would find it  :p
    spacey :)
  • dfh,
Will have a look at the Tesco phones - thanks!

    Basil,
Thanks for the info on the 'unverified listings' - must admit I hadn't noticed them before.
But sorry to say no joy!

But as I said before we're useing mobiles and msn. I'm even learning txt speak on msn - not sure if this is good or bad!

    Cheers,
    Steve

You don't need the tesco home phone - just get a microphone/speakers if you don't have them already and use that with any VoIP client, free for download :D
    spacey :)
