Phones in Halls

We had a card system for our phones at uni. It was more expensive than normal but not vastly expensive, no line rental and not too bad for the international students either. Plus it was free to call other rooms within the network which was handy.0

Substitute the "0870" for the local area code..so in birmingham instead of having 0870 XXX XXXX it was 0121 XXX XXXX
worked for me every time..
This worked for me in Liverpool, our halls phone number was 0870 XXX then your room extension number, so instead we tried 0151 XXX then our extension and it worked.
Give it a go, as Nalibz said, replace 0870 with the area code0 -
what about 01223 as the area code?

Think about a contract mobile phone, obviously its more expensive but you could use free minutes, if your son calls people much he may save money on contract. Skype is another option, he could use it to call your home phone for much less than he is paying now.0

I used skype when I was in halls last year - as the uni took out the phones in each students room, to replace them with an internet line (much more handy !). I'd reccommend a contract phone too, as you can get deals with the minutes, or free calls after certain times. Pop into a local retailer and explain what you are looking for in a contract and I'm sure they can help !

Our halls had an 0870 number - it's standard practice - the idea was also that it was safer and stopped unsolicited calls, as well as making the uni money - we had to buy a phone card to call out on it.
My parents just used mobile to get hold of me. Much easier.0 -
Thanks for the replies.
Tried replacing the 0870 with the Lincoln code but no joy.
So I'm we are using mobiles (contracts) and I'm learning all about msn!0 -
could u use a mobile , i know tesco pay and go have half price calls to 3 fav numbers so if ur on 02 or tesco it would be 5p a min0

If it's free to call freephone numbers, overrider providers might be an option (call18185 etc.) for calling out cheaper.Alex Jones0

Unfortunatly those 'nice' NTL people have barred all freephone numbers.
No worries we're managing with mobiles and msn!0
