hmm currupted hard drive because they sat on it.

on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

I can't believe the hard drive is that bad corrupted. At a guess you could connect it to another computer and drag your data off it if its still functioning to a point.

I will say its worth getting an external hard drive, I friend of mine recently had a similar problem. I managed to recover everything but safe to say he realised how easily things can be lost and how cheap a backup can be.

Where abouts are you, by all means if you live not to far from me (greater manchester) I will sort it for nothing and there is many more like me on here.

it really doesn't make sense that sitting on a laptop would corrupt the HDD, I'd take it elsewhere and ask for a 2nd opinin
