There is a little known old fashioned product called "Witch", a white powder that you sprinkle a couple of spoonfuls on the fire and it cleans everything including the glass and chimney! I dread to think what its made from but it works. My dad reckons there's another make called "Imp". You might get them from an old fashioned ironmonger. Ahaaa i have found it for sale at http://www.castironfires.com/dept.asp?id=85 along with others you could try.0

When I had a Parkray fire I cleaned the glass with liquid ammonia bought from the local old fashioned type hardware store. I am sure you should use protective clothing/mask with it but it was very good for clearing the sinuses!
PS Not only can some of us women light fires, we can chop logs too!Do not allow the risk of failure to stop you trying!0 -

Could it be that the reason you get lots of woodsmoke is actually because the windows are painted shut?!
Sometimes if I open an upstairs window, it stops the fire becoming too smokey. I have a very large 8ft across open fireplace with just a medium sized log basket in so we do get smoke. When the weather is windy, we get no smoke at all and when you even slightly open a window upstairs, it seems to draw the smoke up the chimney much more effectively.
Ask the guy who cleans your chimney. They are often a mine of 'trivia' when it comes to smoke!!Do not allow the risk of failure to stop you trying!0
