Woodburner - blackened window

I'm only just getting the hang of my Dovre woodburner & the window seems to have this burned on soot which wont come off. Any tips?
Nice to save.

Try oven cleaner - the nasty aerosol type. That should do the job.

  • As a long time 'wood burner' the best way to clean the glass is a product called 'Hob Brite' available from most supermarkets...it is designed for ceramic hobs etc but works a treat. Also you should make sure you burn 'hot' with doors closed otherwise you generate soot.
Also make sure wood is well seasoned, and fir trees are by nature more 'resiny'. I have found british native trees burn best.
PS do you fight with your partner about who can light the best fire?

Whilst looking for nasty aerosol oven cleaner I came across a tub of Astonish, which I know from previous use is very good. Burned on smoke came off in a flash.
Mrs_Biff is no good with fires. There is a male gene that gives us that added advantage when it comes to fires, barbeques etc. They got the cleaning gene as compensation.

Once clean smeer the window with washing up liquid it will stop it building up so much and making it easier to remove next time :)

Quick and effective way to remove the black is a sharp blade. Use a flat razor blade or stanley blade. Keep it fairly flat and it will take it right off in seconds. I have used this on the glass window of the BBQ, it works in no time. Cleaners are a waste of space for tackling this effectively.

  • you see it is a gender thing....it has been proven that men have a spacial awareness thing....in our days as hunter gatherers males gained a sense of position / direction / left and right.....so why didn't you girlies get a sense of how to keep a good fire...whilst we were out spearing antelope....you should have been tending the fire and sweeping the cave ( i think you just watched daytime TV all day...then quickly got the fire going when you heard us coming....
  • Maybe you should check your chimney situation.

https://www.toolstation.co.uk do coloured smoke pellets to burn in your grate and check you've got a reasonable flow, they also do an excellent glass scraper.

Free p & p for small orders makes them even better.
Just for one moment, thought I'd found my way.
