Outrageous mechanic bill!

Off topic but this is also why labour rates are so high when garages are doing insurance work. They jack the rates up to compensate for the fact that the insurance company is a pain in the backside to deal with, massively overcomplicates and delays simple jobs, then leaves it until the last possible day to actually pay up.
At least that's the case with the bodyshop I use.
That may well be the case but the OP started this thread about a garage doing serving work, not a bodyshop.
Bodyshop rates may well be higher than garage rates but they different types of work.
Keen photographer with sales in the UK and abroad.
Willing to offer advice on camera equipment and photography if i can!0 -
They maybe only changed oil, filter and plug, but being a garage doing a service with liability I seriously doubt they never inspected the brakes, lights, suspension, tyres, steering and instruments. That all takes time to do and knowledge gained over years of experience. If you dont like having to pay for that use your 1337 mechanix skillz and do it yourself but if you dont even know where to find the spark plug I dont want to be driving on the same roads as you on a home serviced vehicle.0

I did state I was going off topic. I'm sure it's also true for garages when doing insurance work. The point is they can't directly bill for admin time so they find other ways to get it into the bill. At my place the guy who does the admin work is also a perfectly good mechanic, so 3 hours spent faffing about with an insurance company is 3 hours lost work.0
