Clark80 - It's harsh, but you won't get any of the money back. Sadly you agreed to those terms when you booked up with TR, and unfortunately as soon as you book you are tied in, so there is no opportunity to undo the booking fee-free.
Being inflexible is how the travel agent makes money - charging for any little change to your book, irrespective of how quickly you ask to make a change after placing the booking.
You are a victim of another company going bust, but ultimately that isn't TR's fault or problem, and they aren't required to be flexible in your case as you agreed to their T&C.
As others have suggested it's best to go with a package operator to be covered.Legal team on standby0 -

And although i have been using travelrepublic for 4 1/2 years now, i would say Clark80 is on the RAW end... Small print aside, when you book through TR, etc etc, the booking isn't made straight away, there is infact, nearly upto 24hrs before the hotel is contacted and booking made. For spain, etc, TR use lowcostbeds.com (trade), so when u cough up deposit, the booking goes to them, and they make your booking in background.....
And given i have 3 outstanding bookings with TR, 1 for Tenerife and 2 for the US, heres the wording when you click submit on your payment:
"""" Your booking has not yet been confirmed. Please do not make any further travel arrangements until you receive a confirmation email from us containing the provider's booking reference. This is normally sent within 12 hours of placing your booking request however if you do not receive an email within this time frame, please contact our customer services team on 0845 6121 747 (or +44 20 8974 7200). Ironically, even though i paid and i got the receipt emails, i havent been emailed the voucher yet, especially for my tenerife bash next month, best i get onto that!
Anyway, i think clark should have got his money back, given the sensitive nature of the booking..0 -

I think its really harsh - especially as TR system isnt in real time as Stuie explains above. And whilst they are correct in the T&C - if it happened to me i would probably feel hacked off as the OP does, as im sure anyone would .... So give the OP a break:o
And as for your suggestion that he should have just booked other flights (Withabix i think) It wasnt that easy (even if he had the spare cash) My step brother was caught up in it and was due to fly out 4 hours after they were grounded. He didnt want the let the kids down so tried to get new flights...... What a bloody nightmare, there was none to be had!!! In the end up he went 2 days later on a one way ticket out of LGW, then on the way back flew up to Istanbul & then back into Luton. Hidious route with 4 kids, and at a huge hike in price over his original tickets
